This incident happened in the pre-independence era- ‘Sudarshan ji’ was an ardent devotee of Mother Gurga in the ancient city of Varanasi.

It was an auspicious time of pre-dawn ‘Brahmamuhurta’. He was doing his daily chanting immersed till his waist in holy river Ganga. Meanwhile, a large barge of a powerful warlord happened to pass from there. That warlord asked Sudarshan ji in humor –

“Maharaj, you have you been looking at the bottom of Ganga ji for so long; Tell me, what’s hidden there at the bottom of Ganga ji?”

The Maharaj simply said, “What! At the bottom of Ganga ji? … At the bottom of Ganga ji… what else could be there, could be a rabbit, I guess!”

Slightly annoyed at unsolicited hindrance in his prayers, Sudarshan ji replied in same mocking tone.

That Bahubali was thinking of giving some alms/gift to Maharaj ji out of reverence, but his overinflated ego was hurt, hearing the opposite thing, he was enraged.

He roared to his servants, “Cast the net right now for three times”

One or two people standing on ghat nearby signaled to Sudarshan ji not to get into controversy and apologize.

Sudarshan ji did not deviate from his statement – “Now what’s been said, is said.”

The net was casted for the first time, but nothing came out. The trap was thrown again for the second time, then also nothing was caught. Bahubali gave Sudarshan ji an angry smirk, but there was not even a wrinkle of worry on Sudarshan ji’s forehead.

“Third attempt is still left, brother,” he smiled.

Enraged further, the warlord ordered – “Throw the trap, for one last time now…”

The net was casted for the third time. When the trap came was taken out, everyone was amazed – there were two live rabbits in the net.

Warlord was pale with fear now. He fell down at the feet of Sudarshan ji – “You are an enlightened sage Sir. Please forgive my impunity.”

He ordered his men – “Go with Guru ji. Whatever he seeks, make all necessary arrangements as de desires.

Sudarshanji smiled and said – “What arrangements can you make for me! Holy divine mother is there to arrange for my every need. You just mind your business and let me ming mine. That’s all.”

After this incidence, Sudarshan ji was returning towards his home walking in the narrow streets of Varanasi(Kashi). Suddenly somebody slapped him hard. He was stunned in disbelief.

A very beautiful girl was standing in front of him – “Are you going to behave this stupid for your entire life!” … She laughed while Sudarshan ji still looking at her mesmerized. She said further, “Couldn’t you have thought of saying something else? … Out of all things you chose to say rabbit! See this, my clothes were torn by thorny bushes and even palms are bleeding while searching for rabbits in forest of Chunar.” The girl showed both her bleeding palms to him.

A stream of tears started flowing from Sudarshanji’s eyes – “Forgive me, mother. Forgive this foolish, worthless and stupid son of yours.”… and he fell down at the feet of Divine Goddess Mother Bhagwati.
