Maria Wirth- Foreigners who love India and Hinduism

Hailing from Germany, Maria Wirth landed in India by chance in 1980. It was just an accidental stopover (that’s at least what she thought) on her way to Australia after finishing her psychology studies at Hamburg University. She visited the Ardh Kumbh Mela, where she met Sri Anandamayi Ma and Devaraha Baba. Meeting these two renowned saints had left a deep impression upon her, whereafter she decided to stay in India. She continued to live in India and never went to Australia!

Maria Wirth was drawn into a seeker’s journey, searching for truth and encountering the many remarkable men and women, gurus and teachers, who would act as guides for her decades in India.

In her long arduous journey of soul searching, she met spiritual figures from Sai Baba to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, from Anandamayi Ma to Amma.  Her journey took her to secluded and unknown yogis in the Himalayas to the famous celebrity gurus, to colourful festivals and ascetic caves. But her real journey was actually the inner voyage to Yoga or union, a union with the Self.

During this process of transformation from within, she observed India and its culture very closely. In her initial days in India, she thought that every Indian cherishes his rich tradition and culture. However, as she noticed that certain vested interests are preventing Indians and the world from knowing how valuable the ancient Indian heritage is, she started to point out the unique value of Indian tradition and continues to share her thoughts on her blog.

She insists on not shying away from truth because it is not politically correct, and repeatedly urges Indians to be on guard against the vested interests who are denigrating Hinduism and want to destroy Indian Society.

She has recently published her book English “Thank you India” published by Garuda Prakashan. Link to the book is given below.
