An incident of 1852 is famous for the name of Gauraiyyashahi. It was time of British rule in India. The rumor spread that everybody in the jail will get food from same a kitchen and thus the religion of Hindu prisoners will be destroyed. Some said that the prisoners are being converted to Chirtianity by feeding them English bread. It was customary at that time to convert Hindus and feed them English Bread(called Pav) . That ‘s how also the term of ‘Pavwala’ for converted Christians coined.

At the same time there was a decree to break Kashi’s ‘Fatakbandi’ . This angered the people of Varanasi and matter got worse.

At the same order was issued to catch all the Bulls freed in Varanasi and to bring them to ‘Kanihaud’. Kanihaud was a place to collect all stray animals. The public began to oppose it.

Those days, devout Hindus of Gujarat, Kathiawad used to leave bulls in Varanasi, in the name of their ancestors as a part of ‘Vrikshotsarg’ ceremony. They also used to send some money for the fodder of these bulls. All the above said money used to came to Veereshwar and Bhau jani.

These bulls were marked with a Trident (Trishul of Lord Shiva) and were set to roam freely. They were considered holy and no one harmed them in any way. They were respected and considered a form of Lord Shiva.

The company government did not like the ‘Vrikshotsarg’ and bulls were caught and sent to Kanihoud. There were protests and also a riot on this issue. Collector Gavins called a meeting at Nati Imali with the help of Kotwal Pt. Gokulchand, to address the issue.

No agreement could be reached and the angry protesters started throwing Gauraiyya ( a conical smoking pipe traditionally made from fired clay ) from the nearby potter’s shop on the Collector and Kotwal’s team. Collector and his team ran and took shelter in safety. Many officers were injured in this incident. This incident is called ‘Gauraiyyashahi’. Peace was established with great difficulty.

The riots were stopped. Although the ‘Fatakbandi’ was demolished but the orders for catching marked Bulls of Vrikshotsarg were abated. This is a unique incident in history , never ever before Chillums were used as missile for a protest. 🙂
