Pandit Singha Purohit – The Brahmin who rescued Guru HarGobind’s daughter from Mughals

During the medieval era, the basic tenets of our Dharma like Vedas, Cow, temples, Yagnopavit, Agnihotra were under threat of the invaders in Punjab. There remained no choice for Punjab’s Hindus but to arm up and resist.

One such tale is that of Bhai Singha Purohit. Bhai Singha Purohit was a great warrior. He was a mighty commander of the Guru Hargobind’s army. Above all, he was like a family member to the Guru as well as his daughter Viro. He belonged to a Brahmin Purohit family.

The growing strength of Guru Hargobind ji and his followers was regarded with alarm by Shah Jahan, who wanted to crush their power forever. So the Moghul army prepared itself for a direct blow at the Sikhs.

When Shah Jahan’s forces reached Amritsar, his men were roaming everywhere and had abducted Viro, Guru Hargobind’s daughter. . The Guru asked his trusted lieutenant Bhai Singha Purohit to bring back Viro safely. Bhai Singha Purohit was accompanied by Bhai Babak and he rescued the Guru’s young daughter from Mughal’s clutches. Soon after the next morning a battle took place between the Mughals and Bhai Purohit and his army of 500 men. He killed Mughal commander Mohammed Ali in the Battle of Amritsar against Shah Jahan’s Mughal forces. The enemies came forwarded towards Bhai and fired at once. He fell down. Even then, enemy’s soldiers continued to attack him using swords. His limbs were cut to small pieces.

Guru Pratap Suraj text written by Kavi Santokh Singh mentions this in the following lines.

Im Mare Maar Singhe Nihaar. Lalkaar Paryo Jeh Bal Udaar. Bal Bipra Guru Prodha Subhat. Tab Bhayo Samukh Maare Ulat. (Raas 6, Ansu 10, Page 2827).

Meaning — When he saw Sikhs being killed there, he, who had too much power, started to challenge (the enemy). Then, the powerful Brahmin, who was Guru’s Purohit and a warrior, came in front (of the enemy) and killed them.

We often see that radicalized Sikhs are constantly attacking Sanatanis in the name of a fictional character Gangu Brahmin. But do they ever mention the real facts of the bravery of the thousands of Brahmin warriors who served and laid their lives down for Sikhi and the Sikh Gurus?
