Padmini Ekadashi Story
Dharmaraj requested to Lord Krishna, “O Lord! Now kindly tell us about the ekadashi of bright fortnight of Adhik Maas(Adhik Maas is an extra month in Hindu Lunar calendar which come once in four years or 32 months. Adhik maas is also known as Mal Maas or Purushottam maas). Kindly tell us about it’s importance. What’s its name what is the procedure to observed. Please tell us all in detail.”
Lord Sri Krishna said,” O King! The ekadashi falling in bright fortnight Adhik Maas (Mal maas) is known as Padmini Ekadashi. This ekadashi grants many merits. The devotee attains the Abode of Lord Vishnu by observing Adhik maas (Mal Maas/Purushottam Maas) Padmini Ekadashi. This Ekadashi obliterates many sins and renders pleasures of life and salvation in afterlife. If the person observes this vrata with complete faith and right procedure, his wishes are fulfilled. The observers attains glory in this world and goes to Vaikuntha after death. The glory of Padmini Ekadashi Vrata cannot be fully explained even by Lord Brahma , the creator Lord with four faces himself. Yet once Lord Brahma told about the great merits of this vrata to Devarshi Narad, when he was asked by him.
King Yudhisthira, was pleased to hear this and with great humility asked lord Krishna about the procedure of Adhik maas (Mal Mass/Purushottam maas) Padmini Ekadashi. Thus on the request of Yudhisthira record Krishna replied,” Listen O king! Now I will tell you great significance of Purushottam maas (Mal maas/Adhik maas) Padmini Ekadashi, even difficult to be known by even great Munis.
Procedure of Adhik maas ( Mal Maas/Purushottam maas) Padmini Ekadashi entails following: One should take The Oath(sankalp) of vrat, one day before ekadashi on the day of Dashami. Adele we should not eat in bronze vessel and should not eat meat, Masoor pulse, Bengal grams, Honey, Kodo, green vegetables and food offered by someone else. These 8 things are restricted on this day. This day one should eat food made of havishya {barley and rice) .
One should not use salt also. On this day of Adhik maas(Mal maas/Purushottam maas) dashami what is sleep on ground and maintain celibacy. We should get up early in the morning of Ekadashi brahma muhurth before sunrise. After attending nature’s call one should brush his teeth and wash swish his mouth 12 times with water. Lady beautician go to some holy place to take bath like river or take bath at his place only if that is not possible. Person should preferably take bath as per Ayurveda using Seesame seeds, Amla (Indian gooseberry), Kusha(a type of Indian grass), and a mixture of clean soil and cow dung. One should bow down to mother earth while bathing.
Devotee should rub clean soil on his body and pray to mother Earth like following:
“O Mother Earth! Lord Varaha has held you in his hundred arms. Lord Brahma has given you to the mankind. And Kashyap Muni has prayed you by Mantra. Therefore you please clean me my eyes, ear,hair and body parts and prepare me for Lord’s worship. May your touch clean mean everyway. Mother Earth I bow down to you. The cow dung which is born from medicinal plants may take away my sins and make me clean. Mother Earth , born from the spit of Lord Brahma and cleanser of entire cosmos I’m feeling, I bow down to you. May your touch cleanse me also. Lord Vishnu hold conch,mace,discuss (chakra) & Lotus, kindly give me permission to take bath in this holy place,”
Thus saying your prayers like this nd remembering the holy river Ganga and other holy places, the devotee should take bath. After this wearing clean white unshorn cloth one should worship Lord Vishnu. This obliterates biggest of the sins . after performing the rituals of Sandhya and tarpan one should go to Lord Vishnu’s temple and worship him. One can also worship the gold murthis of Radha-Krishna or Shiv-Parvati. One should use a Kalash(Pitcher for worship) made of clay or copper and place Lord Vishnu’s Gold or SIlver Statue above it in a clay of copper plate filled with barley. The Kalash (Pitcher for worship) should be adorned with holy symbols and cloth. Worship Lord Vishnu with lotus or the seasonal flowers. Do a Sodashopachar pooja and offer Lord Dhoop(Incense), Deep(Lamp), Naivedya (Fruits etc) , Sandal paste and flowers. Sing devotional songs and dance with devotional ecstasy for Lord Vishnu. Stay away from bad women and menstruating women for the day . Do not even speak to men with lowly thought and deeds that day. Do not speak ill against the teachers and Brahmans and ascetics.
Exercise restraint in behaviour and talks that day. Tell and listen to the stories of Lord with the other devotees. One should not take food of this Ekadashi and not even water. If the person is weak can’t bear the thirst he my drink water though. At night do bhajans , sing praise of Lord Vishnu and stay awake whole night remembering Lord , singing and dancing.
Devotee should worship 4 times at night, in the pooja of first prahar(quarter) of night , offer coconut, in second prahar puja offer Wood apple(Bael)I third prahar pooja offer Sitafal(Custard apple) and in fourth Prahar puja offer betel nuts or Orange. The merit of first prahar pooja is equal to Agnihotra Yajna, merit of second prahar pooja is of Vajpeya yagna, third prahar pooja is equal to Ashvamedha yajna and merits of fourth prahar pooja is equal to Rajasuya yajna.
Merits of Purushottam Adhik maas (Mal Maas) Shukla Paksha Ekadashi-Padmini Ekadashi surpass the merits of all yajnas, penance(tapas), knowledge or donations. The observance of this vrata is akin to visiting all holy place on earth and bathing in all holy places. The observer gets the merit of visiting all holy places and bath at all holy place just by observing this vrata. After the sunrise one should go and take bath in holy place. Then after worshiping the Lord one should feed Brahmans. After worshiping Lord Vishnu with Kalash, give everything (including lord Vishnu’s murti to a Brahmana. The person who observes the vrata of Purushottam Adhik maas (Mal maas) Shukla Ekadashi-Padmini Ekadashi as per the aforementioned method , he becomes successful in his life. He enjoys ll pleasure in this world goes to the abode of Lord Vishnu after death.
Lord Krishna said, ” O Yudhishthir! I have told all about the procedure of Ekadashi falling in bright fortnight (Shukla Paksh )of Adhik maas (Mal maas/Purushottam maas) known as Padmini Ekadashi as you requested. Same procedure is followed in dark fortnight ( Krishna Paksha) Ekadashi as well . Anyone who has observed Padmini Ekadashi is of Adhik maas(Mal maas/Purushottam maas) , consider him as having done all vratas .
Now I will tell you the beautiful story of Padmini Ekadashi which was told by Pulastya Rishi to Devarshi Narad,
Once Mighty demon king Ravana was held captive by brave King Kartavirya Arjun . Then Maharshi Pulastya, who was also the grandfather of Ravana , requested to Kartavirya and got Ravan released from his clutches. Devarshi Narad was intrigued upon hearing this incidence and asked Rishi Pulastya, ” O Great one among Rishis! Ravana defeated all Gods and even King of Gods Devraj Indra. Hoe come such mighty Ravana was defeated and captured by Kartavirya Arjun? I am intrigued , kindly tell me in more detail.”
Then Rishi Pulastya replied, ‘ O Narada! The explanation lies in the mystery of birth of Kartavirya. Please listen to the story behind his birth.”
Long time back in Treta eon, there was mighty King Kartavirya , in the great lineage of valorous King Hayhay. Kartavirya used to rule over Mahishmati city. He had hundred queens , but did have a single son to carry out his legacy further. King sought the help of doctors,medicanst, gods and sages but could not beget a son. He also performed special yajnas for son but all in vain and king still could not get a son. His condition was sorrowful as that of hungry man who cannot enjoy all other worldly pleasures because he doesn’t find food to satiate his hunger.
At last King Kartavirya thought that only penance (Tapas) could solve his problems and beget him the son as Tapas is the only force which is the root force behind entire creation. As King made up his mind to go for tapas, one of his wives Padmini also decided to go along with him. Padmini was the daughter of famous King Harishchandra of Ikshvaku lineage, who was known for his truthfulness. King Kartavirya and queen Padmini left their royal attires took on the dress of Tapasvi sages and went to Gandhamadana mountain to carry out their penance. King Kartavirya did penance for thousands of years but could not get the success. His lost his robust health and just remained a skinny skeletal structure. This was a woeful sight for his beloved wife Padmini.
Seeing the plight of her husband she went to Sati Anusuya (Wife of Rishi Arti) and asked, ” O pious Mother! My husband has been doing penance for ten thousand years now but has not been able to achieve success yet. Kindly tell me of any Vrata so the Lord Vishnu takes mercy on me and I may beget a son. “
The Great Sati Anusuya said,” O Lotus eyed beautiful Padmini! Purushottam month ( Adhik maas/ Mal maas) is more pious and meritorious than all months . It comes once after 32 months. There are two Ekadashis in this month conjoined with respective ‘Dwadashis(12th day of Hindi Lunar Month)’ . The Ekadashi falling bright fortnight is called Padmini and the one falling in dark fortnight is called Parama Ekadashi. You observe the bright fortnight Padmini ekadashi staying awake on ekadashi night. Lord Vishnu will please with you because of this vrata and will bless you. He will give a son who will not be even defeated by even mighty demon Ravana. ” Thereafter Sati Anusuya told the entire procedure of observance of ekadashi to queen Padmini.
Thus receiving the golden advice from great Sati Anusuya queen Padmini observed the Padmini ekadashi as directed by her and kept awake on ekadashi night singing praises of Lord Vishnu. Queen Padmini used to keep ekadashi vrata without food and stay awake awake on ekadashi night. After a while when Padmini Ekadashi of Adhik maas(Mal maas/Purushottam maas) passed Lord Vishnu appeared in front of queen Padmini and asked her to seek her desired boon. Queen Padmini eulogised Lord Vishnu and showed her gratitude to Lord Vishnu and requested the boon to be given to her husband, King Kartavirya.
Lord Vishnu said, ” O Padmini! Purushottam month is dearest to me among all months. And you have observed Ekadashi vrata and stayed awake on ekadashi night as per the advice of Sati Anusyua .Therefor I am extremely pleased with you.” Then Lord Vishnu said to Kartavirya,” O King! Ask me your desired wish. I will grant you the boon. I am pleased on you because of your wife’s devotion.”
Then King said, “O Lord! Please give me a son who is extremely virtuous , respected by all, with strong and big arms and immensely powerful. That son should be undefeatable by Gods, Humans, Serpents, Demons and every other creature except for You. “
Lord Vishnu Granted the desired boon to King Kartavirya and disappeared. Queen Padmini begot a son named Kartavirya Arjun because of this boon only. There was no one like him in all three worlds. Kartavirya was very powerful King. All Gods and demon used to pay obeisance to him. There is no wonder if such a mighty Kartavirya defeated Ravana, because he was born from the boon of Lord Vishnu. All this happened due to the merits of Padmini Ekadashi of Adhik maas(Mal maas/Purushottam maas). ” Thus Rishi Pulastya went to his ashrama after telling the story of Padmini ekadashi.
Lord Krishna said to Yudhishthira,” The one without any sins, Yudhishthir! Thus I told you about the importance of Purushottama month( Adhik maas/ Mal maas). The person who observe the Ekadashi in bright fortnight of Purushottam month ( Adhik maas/Mal maas) attains all success and glory in this world and goes to abode of Lord Vishnu . Even the person who reads or listen to this story his sins are destroyed. If your sins are like the mountains of dry cotton from many births then Padmini Ekadashi Vrata is like a spark of fire which burns all of them at once.
