Ashwin Krishna Paksha Ekadashi-Indira Ekadashi
Indira Ekadashi Story
Dharmraj Yudhishthir said to Lord Shri Krishna,” O Bhagawan , Kindly have mercy on us and tell us the story the dark fortnight Ekadashi of Ashwin month. What is the name of this ekadashi? What is the significance & procedure to observe this Ekadashi? What are the merits attained by doing this Ekadashi?”
Lord Shri Krishna said, “O Yudhishthir! This Ekadashi falling in the dark fortnight(krishn Paksha) of Ashwin month is known as Parivatrini Ekadashi. All sins are destroyed by observing this Ekadashi and the ancestors suffering in hell are alleviated from their pain and released from the punishment. O king even just listening to the story of this Ekadashi gives the merit few Vaajpeya Yajna. I will tell you a story about this Ekadashi. Listen carefully.”
Once upon a time Devarshi Narad descended from Brahmlok and came down to Yamaloka (The realm of dead). He saw a former King of Earth loka, in Yamaloka who was very pious in his previous life. Devarshi Narad took a great pity on him. Naradaji further came to Maahishmati city, where a King named Indrasen was ruling , following the rules of dharma. Indrasen was the so of the same King who was in Yamloka. King Indrasena was living happily with his children , had great wealth and was great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Rishi Narad appeared in King Indrasen’s court via ethereal route. King Indrasen got up from his throne in respect and offered ardhya (water) and a proper place to sit.
Naradji asked king Indrasen “O King! Is all seven parts of Dharma are being followed properly? Is your mind firm in dharma and you remain fully devoted to Lord Vishnu?”
Hearing upon thus the word of Devarshi Narada King Indrasen replied,” O Devarshi! With you grace everything is alright in my kingdom and all religious dharmic traditions are being followed and Yajnas are being held regularly. Kindly tell the purpose of your visit.”
Then Naradji said,” o King! Please listen to my word Once I visited Yamaloka and after getting duly respect by noble Yama, I praised the pious and truthful Yama. Then I found your father sitting in same court. Your father was a great scholar, benevolent donar and very pious person. I felt very sad finding him there in Yama court. I asked the reason behind the presence of your father in Yamaloka. I was told that he was there due his mistake in observing an Ekadashi Vrata. Your father has sent a message for you.He has said that due to the broken Ekadashi fast I am living here in Yamaloka. If you carry out the fast of Indira Ekadashi which falls in dark fortnight in Ashwin month, then I would attain heaven.
King became very sad upon hearing the news of his father being in Yamaloka and request Naradji,” O Great Rishi ! Kindly tell me the procedure of this Ekadashi.
Naradji said, “O King! On the tenth day (Dashami tithi) of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of Ashwin month one should get take bath in morning and should and take bath in river in afternoon. Then he should perform Shradha of his Pitars (departed ancestors) and please Brahmans by offerings. he should take food only one time at that day and should sleep on ground.
He should get up early n morning next day on Ekadashi and clean his teeth with Datun (a brush made from tender twigs for medicinal trees like Neem) and should take bath. Then she should accept the rules of the fasting with full faith and devotion and should do sankalpas (a formal Promise by pronouncing the promise with water in hand later dropping the water) thus,” I take oath that I will fast today with full devotion and faith and will not indulge in any kind of sensory pleasures today and will observe Ekadashi vrata. O the lotus eyed Lord Vishnu, I am in your aegis Kindly protect me and my vrata.” After this he should perform Shradha in front of Shaaligram. Should offer fruits for food to Brahmanas and give them Dakshnias (a small mount of money and gifts). The leftover from grain offering to Pitars should be given to cow. The offering to cow should not be small like the offering to Dog or crow, it should be big and one should feed cow stomochful as per his capacity.
One should worship Lord Hrishikesh with Dhoop (incense) , Deep(lamp), Flowers, Naivedya (fruits or sweet offerings) etc .One should stay awake near the Lord. One should not tell a lie. On following day of Dwadashi , he should worship Lord Vishnu and should feed Brahmanas. Then he should eat with with brothers, sons and relatives observing full silence. This is the procedure of Indira Ekadashi.. If you will observe this fast without any laxity then your father will get the merit of this Ekadashi and he will definitely go the heaven Devarshi Narad disappeared after advising King Indrasen.”
As per the direction given by Narad Rishi, King Indrasen observed Indiara Ekadashi fast with his brothers , relatives and his courtiers. Lord Vishnu was pleased with his vrata and flowers showered from the sky . King Indrasen’s father rode the divine Garuna and went to the abode of Lord Vishnu. Due to merits attained by observing Indira Ekadashi, King Indrasen also went to heaven dafter ruling for many years and after enthroning his son as King.
Lord Shri Krishna said,”O Yudhishthir! I told you the importance of Indira Ekadashi . All sins are destroyed just reading or listening only to this story and person attains heaven after enjoying the pleasures of this earth.”
