भाद्रपद कृष्ण पक्ष एकादशी-अजा एकादशी
कुंतीपुत्र युधिष्ठिर बोले,” हे जनार्दन! अब आप मुझे भादों मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी के बारे में बतलाइए | इस एकादशी का क्या नाम है तथा उसकी विधि और महात्म्य क्या है?
भगवान श्री कृष्ण बोले,” सब प्रकार के समस्त पापोंका नाश करनेवाली भादों मास के कृष्ण पक्ष को आने वाली इस एकादशी का नाम अजा एकादशी है| श्रद्धालु मनुष्य इस एकादशी का व्रत करते हैं तो उनके समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं| इसके व्रत को करने से मनुष्य पापों से मुक्त होकर मनोवांच्छित फल पाता है|
जो मनुष्य इस दिन भगवान हृषिकेश का पूजन करते हैं, उनको वैकुंठ की प्राप्ति होती है| इस लोक और परलोक में सहायता करनेवाली इस एकादशी के समान संसार में दूसरी एकादशी नही है| इस एकादशी का महात्म्य गौतम मुनि ही जानते हैं , जिन्होने युगों का परिवर्तन कर दिया था| अब मैं इसकी कथा कहता हूँ, ध्यानपूर्वक सुनो|
प्राचीन कल में हरिशचंद्र नमक एक सत्यवादी राजा राज्य करता था| उसकी सत्यनिष्ठा अटूट थी| वह सदैव सोते-जागते सत्यव्रत का पालन करता था| वह अत्यंत वीर, प्रतापी तथा सत्यवादी था| उसने किस कर्म के तथा प्रतिज्ञा के वशीभूत होकर अपना सारा राज्य और धन दान में दे दिया था| साथ ही अपनी स्त्री , पुत्र तथा स्वयं को भी बेच दिया था|
श्री कृष्ण भगवान बोले,” हे राजन! किस कारणवश राजा के साथ यह सब कुछ हुआ , वह भी सुनो| राजा हरिशचंद्र सूर्यवंश में 31वीं पीढ़ी का राजा था| उसके द्वार पर एक श्याम पट पर मणियों से लिखा हुआ था – ‘इस द्वार पर मुँह माँगा दान दिया जाता है|’
ऋषि विश्वामित्र ने उस लेख को पढ़कर यह कहा की मणियों का यह लेख मिथ्या है|
तब राजा हरिशचंद्र ने उत्तर दिया की परीक्षा कर लें|
ऋषि बोले ,” अपना राज्य मुझे दे दो|”
राजा बोले ,” राज्य आपका है…और क्या चाहिए|”
तब विश्वामित्र बोले,” दक्षिणा भी तो लेनी है| राहु-केतु तथा शनि की पीड़ा भोगनी सरल है| शनि की साढ़े-साती का कष्ट भी सुगम है, परंतु मेरी परीक्षा में खरा उतरना बड़ा कठिन है| आपको मुर्दे जलाने पड़ेंगे , तेरी रानी को दासी बनना पडेगा| यदि इन सब अत्याचारों का भय नही हो तो मेरे साथ काशी चलो|”
राजा ने धर्म का सत्कार किया और अपने वचन का पालन किया| राजा स्वयं एक चंडाल का दास बन गया | वह मृतकों के कफ़न ग्रहण करता और श्मशान की चौकीदारी करता रहता| उसकी रानी दासी बन गयी, पुत्र को नाग बनाकर विश्वामित्र ने डस लिया|ऐसी विपत्ति में , कष्टों को भोगते हुए भी राजा विचलित नही हुआ और सत्य का साथ नही छोड़ा| उसके दुखों का अंत नही हो रहा था| कई बार चिंता में डूबकर राजा विचारने लगता मैं कहाँ जाओं, क्या करूँ की मेरा उद्धार हो| इस प्रकार रहते हुए राजा को कई वर्ष व्यतीत हो गये| उसे अपने इस नीच कर्म पर दुख होने लगा| वह इससे मुक्त होने का उपाय खोजने लगा| उसके मन में शोक की अग्नि भड़क रही थी|
एक दिन राजा हरिशचंद्र ने भगवान विष्णु का ध्यान करके कुछ भी नही खाया| वह इसी प्रकार चिंता में बैठा हुआ था कि उधर से गौतम ऋषि निकले| राजा ने उनको देखके प्रणाम किया और अपनी दुख भरी कथा सुनाई| महर्षि गौतम राजा के दुखभरे वाक्यों को सुन करके अत्यंत दुखी हुए| उनके दिल में राजा के प्रति दया आ गयी|
गौतम ऋषि बोले,” हे राजन! तुम्हारे भाग्य से आज से सात दिन बाद भादों मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की अजा नाम की एकादशी आएगी| तुम इस एकादशी का विधिपूर्वक व्रत करो और रात्रि पर्यंत जागरण करो| इस व्रत के पुण्य के प्रभाव से तुम्हारे समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाएँगे|”
राज से इस प्रकार कहके गौतम ऋषि अंतर्ध्यान हो गये| राजा ने ऋषि के कथाननुसार एकादशी के आने पर विधिपूर्वक व्रत और रात्रि जागरण किया| उस व्रत के प्रभाव से राजा के समस्त पाप नष्ट हो गये और राजा की परीक्षा लेने हेतु रचा हुआ षडयंत्र भी समाप्त हो गया| स्वर्ग में जय-जय करके , पुष्पों की बारिश होने लगी| राजा ने अपने सामने ब्रह्मा, विष्णु,महेश, इन्द्रादि देवताओं को खड़ा देखा| राजा का मृत पुत्र जीवित हो गया| राजा ने अपनी रानी, पुत्र और स्वयं को वस्त्र आभूषणो से युक्त देखा|
अजा एकादशी के प्रभाव से राजा को पुनः राज्य मिल गया| उसने अयोध्या नगरी में आके एकादशी का पूर्ण सत्कार किया| उसके राज्य में बालक, वृद्ध सब एकादशी का व्रत करने लगे| एकादशी व्रत के प्रभाव से राजा अंत में परिवार सहित स्वर्ग गया|
हे राजन! यह सब अजा एकादशी व्रत के प्रभाव से हुआ| व्रत के प्रभाव से ही राजा हरिशचंद्र षडयंत्र से मुक्त आहुआ| जो मनुष्य विधिपूर्वक इस व्रत को करते हुए रात्रि जागरण करते हैं, उनके समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं तथा अंत मैं स्वर्ग लोक को प्राप्त होते हैं| इस एकादशी की कथा के श्रवण मात्र से ही अश्वमेध यज्ञ का फल प्राप्त होता है|
Bhadrapad Krishna Ekadashi-Aja Ekadashi
Yudhishthir said to Lord Shri Krishna,” O Janardan, Now please tell us about the story of Dark Fortnight Ekadashi of Bhadrapad month. What is the name of this Ekadashi? What is the significance & procedure to observe this Ekadashi?
Lord Shri Krishna said, “This Ekadashi falling in the dark fortnight of Bhadrapad month is the destroyer of all kinds of sins and is known as Aja Ekadashi. If the people observe this Ekadashi with full faith and devotion all their sins are destroyed.Not only it destroys the sins of the observer, he also gets his wishes fulfilled . The person who worships Lord Hrishikesh on this day , he attains the Vaikuntha (The abode of Lord Vishnu). No other Ekadashi can match the Aja Ekadashi when it comes to render the impactful results in this mortal planeof Earth and heavenly abode at the same time.The real essence and greatness of this Ekadashi is known by great Gautam Rishi who changed the course of the Yuga. Now, I will tell you a story to you about this Ekadashi. Listen carefully.
Once upon a time in olden a days, there was a a truthful King Harishchandra. His honesty and truthfulness was unbroken. he always used to speak truth all the time. He was very brave, victorious and truthful. He once gave donated his Kingdom and wealth due to his promise. He even sold himself, his wife and son to fulfill the terms of the donation.
Lord Krishna further says,” O King , Why all did this happen, Listen to the reason behind this as well. King Harishchandra was the 31st descendant King of the virtuous Solar Dynasty (Surya Vansh). He had and inscription written with jewels on a black board ,on his gate, announcing,” One can avail any desired donation on this place” . Rishi Vishwamitra read this and proclaimed that this inscription was false. Then King Harishchandra said , The inscription is absolutely true. If you want to test and see, please go ahead. Rishi asked ,” Give me your kingdom.” Harishchandra replied,” Kingdom is yours….What else do you want”.
Vishwamitra said,” I have to take the Dakshina( A token of money paid to the Rishis after any virtuous act such as donation or Yagna) as well. It would be easier to bear the troubles of evil planets like Rahu, Ketu, Saturn or even the period of Sadhe-Saati (Seven and half years of trial time under the influence of planet Staurn. It is said that Saadhe- saati is really a difficulty period to sustain and it an really make or break a person ) would be easier but passing on my test would prove more difficult.

The King Harishchandra kept his promise and thus upheld the dharma.He became a Chandala(person who help cremate the bodies after death) on a cremation Ghat in Varanasi ( That Ghat is known as Harishchandra Ghat now in Varanasi. It is considered to be very auspicious to get cremated on that Ghat now. It is believed that people who die in Varanasi attain Moksha/salvation immediately and do not have to reincarnate again).. Harishchandra had to collect the pieces of covering cloths from dead bodies and used to guard and act as watchman also on the ghat. His queen became a maid servant and Rishi Vishvamitra bit his son Rohit taking the form of a serpent. As if all the hardship thrown upon Harishchandra was not enough of the test.
Even in this condition , after bearding all the adversities the King did not deter for his path of truthfulness and honesty. His miseries were not coming t any end. Many times the King used to go in deep sorrow and used to think, “How should I get out of this situation? What should I do? Where and whom should I seek help. Many years passed by bearing this agony.” Now King was feeling greatly aggrieved by his lowly work. He was lamenting and wanted to get free from this predicament.
One day king was remembering Lord Vishnu and did not eat anything and was sitting just mulling over his situation. Then Great Gautam Rishi passed by from there. King paid his obeisance, did pranam and told him about his predicament. Maharshi Gautma got a great pity on King’s, hearing upon his sufferings . He said to the King,” O King you are lucky that just after seven days from now there is Aja Ekadashi falling on the Bhadrapad Krishna Ekadashi. You should observe this Ekadashi with full procedure and stay awake at night. All your miseries and sorrow will be disappear because of the merits of this Ekadashi.
Gautam Rishi disappeared after giving advice to the King. King Harishchandra observed the the fast of Aja Ekadashi and stayed awake at night as directed by Gautam Rishi . All Kings previous sins were destroyed because of that fast and the test conspired to attesting the truthfulness was also nullified. Heavens started singing praises of King Harishchandra and flowers were showered upon King from heaven. Harishchandra found Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Lord Mahesh in front of him. Kings dead son was revived. King found himself, His wife and his son adorned in royal attire and adorned with jewels.
King got his kingdom back due to the merits of Aja Ekadashi. After this everyone in his kingdom including, children, ,old age , everyone started observing Ekadashi fast. Due to the merits of Ekadashi the King went to heaven alongwith his family in the end.
Lord Krishna says,”O king, all this happened because of the merits of Aja Ekdashi. The King Harishchandra got free form the conspiracy of test because of the merits of the Ekadashi only. People who observe this Ekadashi with full procedure and , keep awake at night all their sins are destroyed and they finally heaven. Person attains the merits of Ashwamedh Yajna just by listening to the story of this Ekadashi.”
