आषाढ़ कृष्ण एकादशी- योगिनी एकादशी
धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर कहने लगे ,” हे जनार्दन! मैने ज्येष्ठ शुक्ल एकादशी के व्रत का महात्म्य सुना, अब आप कृपा कर आषाढ़ कृष्ण एकादशी की कथा का वर्णन कीजिए| इस एकादशी का क्या नाम है तथा इसका क्या महात्म्य है? सब कृपा करके सविस्तार वर्णन कीजिए|”
श्री कृष्ण बोले,” हे राजन! आषाढ़ मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम योगिनी है| इसके व्रत से साधक के समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं| यह इस लोक में और परलोक में मुक्ति देने वाली है| यह एकादशी तीनो लोकों में प्रसिद्ध है| इसके महात्म्य की पुराणो में वर्णन की हुई एक कथा कहता हूँ, ध्यानपूर्वक सुनो|”
स्वर्गधाम की अलकापुरी नमक नगरी में कुबेर नाम का एक राजा राज्य करता था| वह भगवान शिव का भक्त था और प्रतिदिन शिव की पूजा किया करता था| हेम नाम का एक माली पूजन के लिए उसके यहाँ फूल लाया करता था| उस माली की विशालाक्षी नाम की अत्यंत सुंदर स्त्री थी| एक दिन वह मानसरोवर से पुष्प तो ले आया परंतु पत्नी की छवि देखकर कामासाक्त होने के कारण उससे हास्य, विनोद तथा रमण करने लगा और राजा के फूल भूल गया|माली दोपहर तक पुष्प लेकर राजा के पास नही पहुँचा| राजा उसकी राह देखता रहा| अंत में उसने सेवकों को आज्ञा दी की तुम लोग जाकर माली के ना आने के कारण का पता लगाकर आओ, वह अभी तक पुष्प नही लाया है| यक्षपति कुबेर ने अपने गुप्त यक्षों को भेजा| यक्ष तो उसके कुकर्मों को देख गये , लेकिन वह कामांध उनको ना देख सका| यक्ष कुबेर के पास आकर कहने लगे,” महाराज! वह पापी अति कामी है| काम-वासना में पड़ा, अपनी स्त्री के साथ हास्य, विनोद तथा रमण कर रहा है|”
यह सुनकर कुबेर ने क्रोधित होकर उसे बुलाया| हेम माली डर से काँपता हुआ, उपस्थित हुआ| उसको देखकर राजा कुबेर को बेहद क्रोध आया|क्रोध के मारे उसके होंठ थर-थर काँप रहे थे | कहने लगा,” अरे पापी! महानीच! कामी! तूने मेरे परम पूजनीय ईश्वरों के ईश्वर शिवजी महाराज का अनादर किया है| तूने उनकी पूजा में विघ्न डाला है, पूजा के महत्व को नही समझा| इसलिए मैं तुझको श्राप देता हूँ की तू स्त्री का वियोग सहेगा और मृत्युलोक में जाकर कोढ़ी होगा|”
कुबेर के श्राप से माली का स्वर्ग से पतन हो गया और वह उसी क्षण पृथ्वी पर गिर गया| भूतल पर आते ही उसे श्वेत कोढ़ हो गया, कोढ़ी बनकर वह कष्ट पाने लगा| उसकी स्त्री भी उसी समय अंतर्ध्यान हो गयी| मृत्युलोक में आकर उसने अनेक दु:ख भोगे, भयानक जंगल में जाकर बिन अन्न और जल के भटकता रहा| रात्रि को निद्रा भी नही आती थी| उसके शरीर से तो दुर्गंध आती थी , परंतु उसका अंतःकरण दर्पण के समान शुद्ध था| शिवजी के भक्ति और पूजा के प्रभाव से उसकी बुद्धि मलिन ना हुई| उसको पिछले जन्म की स्मृति का ज्ञान आवश्य रहा|
प्रायश्चित करने के लिए घूमते-घूमते एक दिन वह मार्कण्डेय ऋषि के आश्रम में पहुँच गया, जो हिमालय पर्वत में था| आश्रम ब्रह्मा की सभा के समान था और ऋषि ब्रह्मा से भी अधिक वृद्ध थे | श्राप से दुखी माली वहाँ जाकर उनके चरणों में गिर पड़ा| वहाँ आने से पूर्व वह प्रायश्चित करने के लिए हरिद्वार में आया, गंगा स्नान किया परंतु मधुमक्खियों ने वहाँ भी उसका पीछा ना छोड़ा और भिन -भिन करती रहीं| अंत में हेम पतित-पावनी भूमि उत्तराखंड की ओर चला| देवप्रयाग होते हुए यमुनोत्री के तट पर पहुँचा , जहाँ चिरजीवा मार्कण्डेय मुनि का आश्रम था| उनके दर्शन से सारी मधुमक्खियाँ अंतर्ध्यान हो गयीं|
हेम ने अपने अपराध की कथा सुनकर मुनि से मुक्ति का उपाय पूचछा| संत महर्षि बड़े दयालु होते है| हेम माली को कष्ट पाते देखकर मार्कंडेजी बोले,” हे वॅट्स ! तूने ऐसे कौन सा पाप किया है की जिसके प्रभाव से तू कोढ़ी होकर यह दुख भोग रहा है|
हेम बोला,” हे ऋषिश्रेष्ठ! मैं कुबेर का सेवक हेम हूँ|मैं राजा की पूजा के लिए नित्य-प्रति पुष्प लाया करात था| एक दिन मुझे स्त्री के प्रति अनुचित आकर्षण हो गया और अपनी स्त्री के साथ विहार करते देर हो गयी| मैं दोपहर तक पुष्प लेकर नही पहुँचा| यक्षराज कुबेर ने मुझे श्राप दे दिया कि तू अपनी स्त्री का वियोग सहेगा और मृत्युलोक में जाकर कोढ़ी बनाकर दुख भोगेगा| इस श्राप से मैं कोढ़ी होकर पत्नी का वियोग सह रहा हूँ| मैं अपार कष्ट भोग रहा हूँ , अतः आप कृपा करके मुझे कोई ऐसा उपाय बतायें , जिससे मैं श्रापमुक्त हो सकूँ|
इस पर मार्कंडेय ऋषि बोले,” तूने मेरे सन्मुख चूँकि सत्य वचन कहे है, इसलिए मैं तेरे उद्धार के लिए एक व्रत बताता हूँ|यदि तू अषाढ़ मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की योगिनी नमक एकादशी का व्रत करेगा तो तेरे सब पाप नष्ट हो जाएँगे|
यह सुनकर हेम माली ने अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर मुनि को साष्टांग प्रणाम किया| मुनि ने उसको अत्यंत स्नेह के साथ उठाया और योगिनी एकादशी की विधि बताई| ऋषि की अज्ञानुसार हेम माली ने योगिनी एकादशी का विधिपूर्वक व्रत किया और व्रत के प्रभाव से दिव्य स्वरूप को प्राप्त हुआ| बह फिर से अपने पुराने स्वरूप में आकर पत्नी के साथ विहार करने लगा|
हे राजन! यह योगिनी एकादशी का व्रत अनेक यज्ञ करने के बराबर फल देता है| इस योगिनी एकादशी के व्रत का फल 88000 ब्राह्मणो को भोजन कराने के फल के बारबर है| इसके व्रत से समस्त पाप दूर हो जाते हैं और अंत में स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति होती है|

After the unbearable heat of Jyesth Month. Ashadh/Aashaadh aslo called Yogini Ekadashi is supposed to the start of rainy season in India.First showers of the rain touch the thirsty soil after the unbearable heat of Jyesth month. First rains drop get soaked in sun scorched, cracked soil as if it ha evaporated. But it is the harbinger of lush green months of Sharavan & Bhadon full of rain. Creatures like frogs etc come out of their hibernation. It also brings the insects like the red velvety ” Indra ka Hathi” on the ground. It makes us wonder where were these creatures in the heat of the summer.
Yogini Ekadashi falls in such hopeful times of the year. This gives us 15 days time to prepare for our vows for the next Devashayani Ekadashi. The Story of Ashadh Krishna Ekadashi(Yogini Ekadashi) is as follows.
Dharmaraj Yudhishthir said to Lord Krishna,” O Protector of the world, I have learnt about the importance of Jyetsh Shukla Ekadashi now kindly grace us and tell us the story of Ashadh Krishna Ekadashi. What is the name & importance of this Ekadashi ? Kindly tell us all about it.”
Lord Krishna said,” The Ekadashi falling is Krishna fortnight Ashadh month is called Yogini Ekadashi. This fast destroys all the sins f the observer. The fasting on this day give the freedom of punishment in this Loka(earthly plane ) and in other loka ( Life after death ) as well. This Ekadashi is famous in all three realms. I will tell you a story about this , listen carefully.
Lord of wealth and the treasurer of Demi Gods, Lord Kubera used to rule inn the divine city of Alakapuri. He was a great Shiva devotee and use d to worship Lord Shiva daily. He has a gardener named Hem who used to bring him flowers for Lord Shiva’s worship everyday. Hem’s wife Vishalakshi was very beautiful. Vishalakshi means One with very beautiful big eyes. One day Hem brought the flowers from the holy Manasaraovar lake.
But he enamored with his wife’s beauty he engaged in chatting laughing and fornicating with his wife and forgot to bring flowers to Kubera. King waited for flowers til afternoon and then he sent his servants to find out the reason behind the delay. He sent his secret Yakshas who hid themselves and went to Hem’s place to find out the reason. They were invisible therefore Hem couldn’t see them but they fund out the reason and informed King Kubera thus .” Lord , Hem is lustful man and he has forgotten his duty. He is engaged in fornication and lustful activities at the time when he should be doing his duty.”
Kubera was enraged listening to this and he called Hem. He was quivering from anger.Seeing Hem he was more enraged and Cursed him this,” You are a sinner,lascivious, and engaged in lowly activities at the time of duty and have committed great sin by hindering the worship by not bringing flowers in time and thus disrespected the Lord of the Lords , The Great Lord Shiva. You have not understood the importance of worship. I curse you that you will face the pain of severance from your wife and will fall from Alakapuri become a leper in the mortal world.
Hem fell down from the Alakapuri that very moment. His wife was separated from him. Hem became a leper and engulfed in great pain and misery. He used to roam around in dense forests and with food or water and could not even sleep at night. His body used to smell rotten but his conscience was clear like a mirror due the influence of Lord Shiva’s devotion and the previous service he did to him. He remembered his previous birth in Alakapuri and kept maintained a devotional attitude always.
In order to do repentance he reached in Himalaya. He went to Haridwar and took a dip on holy Ganges water but flies didn’t leave him and kept on hovering over his wounds and kept on tormenting him. At last he started towards the holy land of Uttarakhand From the holy confluence of Devprayag he reached Yamunotri, on the origin and source of Yamuna river. There was the hermitage of immortal Markandeya Rishi. Markendeya Rishi was even older than Brahma,the creator of world. This is because Markandeya Rishi is immortal and remains alive even after annihilation of world.Once Hem saws Markendeya Rishi his tormentor , flies disappeared immediately thereafter. Rishi was very Kind and had a pity on the Hema and asked him,” Son , what sin you have committed that you are suffering from this great misery.”
Hem said,” O The Best one in Rishis, I am the servant of Lord Kubera. I sued to bring flower for everyday worship f king. One day I was enchanted by my wife’ beauty at wrong time and got late to fetch flowers to King. King pf Yaksha Kubera gave me a curse to become a leper and become separated from my wife. I am suffering this great misery and became leaper and have been separated from my wife. I am in great distress now. Kindly have a pity on me and tell me w away to end this curse.
The great Markendeya Rishi replied to Hem thus,” Since you have told truth in front of me, I am telling you a way out of your misery. If you observe the fast of Krishna fortnight of Ashadh month , known as Yogini Ekadashi , it will destroy all your sins.
Hem was elated upon listening to Rishi’s advice and did sasthang dandavat (Sasthang means with all eight parts).Rishi Markandeya took him up with much love and told him the procedure to carry out the Yogini Ekadashi. As per the direction given by Rishi and got his previous divine form back dues the effect of his fast observance. He met his wife again and started living happily thereafter.
Lord Krishna Says, O Yudhisthir Yogini Ekadashi fast give the merits of doing many yagnas, The merits of Yogini Ekadashi is equal to feeding 88000 Brahmans. This fast removes all sins and observer achieves heaven in his afterlife.
