वैशाख कृष्ण एकादशी-वरूथिनी एकादशी
Varuthini Ekadashi is celebrated in Krishna paksha (Waning moon phase)second month- Vaishakh of Hindu Lunar calendar.
Once Pandav king Yudhishthir asked Shri Kirshna about the Vaishakh Krishna Ekadashi. He said “Dear Lord , Please tell us about Vaishakh Krishna Ekadashi , its procedure and the merits attained by observing this fast”. Lord Shri Krishna says,” O King of Kings, Yudhisthir, The Ekadashi falling on the Krishna Paksha of Vaishakh month is called Varuthini Ekadashi. This fast is purveyor of great luck and it burns sins and renders Moksha (Salvation) to the observer. All sins of person gets destroyed if he observes this fast. This fast gives great spiritual merit. If some unlucky soul does this fast , he gets great luck and fortune. King Mandhata & Dhndhumar went to heaven due to the merits attained by observing this fast.
The merits of Varuthini fast are same as the doing tapasya (penance) for Ten thousand years. Scriptures say that donation of elephants, horses, land as great. But the donation of Til (Sesame seeds) is greater than land, gold donation is greater than Til and Donating food grain is greater than the donation of Gold. Bu the merits of Varuthini Ekadashi fast are greater than food grain and equals the merit of Kanyadaan (Act of marrying daughter to a suitable groom).
The results obtained by donation 1 Mann Gold ( a unit of measurement , 1 Mann slightly less than 40 Kgs) in Kurukshetra at the time of Solar Eclipse IS SAME AS merit obtained by observing the fast of Varutihini Ekadashi.
Person who observes this fast enjoys the pleasures of this world and achieves heaven after life. There is no donation which equals merit of food grain donation , it is considered equivalent to Kanyadaan (Merit attained by marrying daughter to suitable groom) . Donation of food grain satisfied Gods, man and forefathers. Varuthini ekadashi gives you merit equal to the donation of Food grain and Kanyadaan.
It is said that people who take the wealth of their daughter, they go hell and stay there till day of annihilation or they take next birth in the form of male cat in next birth If people who perform marriage ceremony of their daughter with affection, love and a lot of gifts to daughter , the merits obtained by them are unparalleled.
Anyone who observes this Varauthini Ekadashi fast they get the merit of Kanyadaan.
Rules for Observing Varuthini Ekadashi fast
A day before Varuthini Ekadashi on Dashami (tenth day) should leave following things :
- Stop eating in bronze vessels
- Non veg food
- Masoor Pulse
- Leaves of Grams
- Leaves of Kondon ( A seed like mustard)
- Honey
- Food offered by others
- Eating twice ( Means eac=t only one meal a day)
- Abstain from sex in any form
Fast observer should maintain complete Brahmacharya(celibacy) on all three days( a day before, on fast day and a day later). He should not sleep. He should not eat beetle leave, or do datun ( toothbrush has to be done early in morning at 4 am.-Brahmuhurt) . He should not bitching about others , should not lie, should not be angry and should leave the company of sinful people on this day The observer should not use salt,oil and food grains. In essence the fast observer should carry out the fast with utmost sincerity and complete purity.
Varuthini Ekadashi Story
Lord Krishna Says ; O Yudhishthir , I am telling you as story about Varuthini Ekadashi Listen carefully. Once upon a time A king called Mandhata used to rule nearby Narmada river. He was just and noble king and used to do large hearted donations and was meditative and lived a good life. After he retired from his rule he was one doing tapasya (penance in forest, that very time a large Bear attacked him and started chewing his leg. King had left the Khsatriya dharma already and was living a sage’s life therefor he didn’t get angry and started praying to God to help him. Lord Vishnu appeared instantly and killed Bear with his Chakra and saved King’s life. Bear had already chewed King;s leg.He was very sad because of this. Knowing the reason Lord Vishnu sadi, “My Dear Child,You go to Mathura city and worship my Varah (Boar ) incarnation idol while keeping Varithini Ekadashi fast. You get all your lost limbs back and you will be completely healthy. Bear has chewed your leg because of a sin from one of your previous birth.
King obeyed Lord and did as he told and observed Varuthini Ekadashi fast. He became completely healthy and got his limbs once again due to the merits of this fast.
Lord Krishna further says, “O King, People who observe this fast attain heaven. People should be vary of the bad karmas they do. If this fast is observed properly, Yamaraja(God of death) is pleased with them. Even the reading significance of this fast gives great merits. The merits obtained by this fast are even greater than taking bath in Ganges.
Fast has to be broken on the next day on Dwadashi morning during auspicious muhurta.
