भगवान श्री कृष्ण कहने लगे, ” हे धर्मराज! अब मैं तुम्हे देव प्रबोधिनी एकादशी का महात्म्य सुनाता हूँ| इस संबंध में एक समय में एक समय ब्रह्मा जी और देवर्षि नारद के मध्य हुए वार्तालाप को सुनो| पापों को हरने वाली, पुण्य और मुक्ति देने वाली एकादशी का महात्म्य सुनो | पृथ्वी पर भागीरथी, तीर्थों, नदी , समुद्रों का प्रभाव तभी तक है , जब तक की कार्तिक मास की देव प्रबोधिनी एकादशी नही आती है| यह महान पुण्य देने वाली है| मनुष्य को जो फल एक हज़ार आश्वमेध यज्ञों और एक सौ राजसूय यज्ञो से मिलता है, वही देव प्रबोधिनी एकादशी के व्रत के प्रभाव से मिलता है|

नारादजी ने ब्रह्मा जी से पूछा,” हे पिता श्री, देव प्रबोधिनी एकादशी को एक समय भोजन करने से, रात्रि को भोजन करने से तथा सारे दिन उपवास करने से क्या फल मिलता है? आप विस्तार पूर्वक मुझे बतायें|

ब्रह्माजी बोले,” हे पुत्र ! एक बार भोजन करने से एक जन्म के, रात्रि को भोजन करने से दो जन्म के तथा पूरा दिन उपवास करने से सात जन्मो के पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं| जो वस्तु तीनो लोकों मे ना मिल सके और दिखाई ना दे सके वह देव प्रबोधिनी एकादशी से प्राप्त हो सकती है| जिसके हृदय में प्रबोधिनी एकादशी का व्रत करने की इच्छा उत्पन्न होती है, उसके सौ जन्मो के पाप भस्म हो जाते हैं| मेरु और मन्दराचल के समान भारी पाप भी नष्ट हो जाते हैं| इतना ही नही अनेक जन्मो में किए हुए पाप समूह क्षण भर में नष्ट हो जाते हैं| जैसे रूई के बड़े भारी ढेर को अग्नि की एक छोटी सी चिंगारी भस्म कर देती है, वैसे ही पूर्ण श्रद्धा, अटूट विश्वास और विधिपूर्वक किया गया थोड़ा सा पुण्य कर्म अनंत फल देता है|

वह पुण्य पर्वत के समान अटल हो जाता है| जो मनुष्य अपने स्वाभावानुसार इस प्रबोधिनी एकादशी  का विधि पूर्वक व्रत करते हैं उन्हे पूर्ण फल प्राप्त होता है| परंतु विधि रहित व्रत पूजन चाहे कितना ही किया जाये, पूर्ण फलदायी नही होता|मनुष्य को उसका कुछ भी फल नही मिलता| संध्या ना करने वाले , नास्तिक, वेद निंदक, धर्म शास्त्र को दूषित करने वाले , मूर्ख ,दुराचारी, दूसरे की स्त्री का अपहरण करने वाले, सदैव पाप कर्मो में लगे रहने वाले , धोखा देना वाले ब्राह्मण अथवा शूद्र , परस्त्री गमन करने वाले तथा ब्राह्मणी से भोग करने वाले – ये सब चंडाल के समान हैं| ये अपने समस्त पुण्य नष्ट करते हैं| जो विधवा अथवा सधवा ब्राह्मणी से भोग करते हैं, वे अपने कुल को भी नष्ट कर देते हैं| जो परस्त्री गमन करते हैं उनके संतान नही होती| तथा पूर्व जन्म के संचित सब अच्छे कर्म नष्ट हो जाते हैं| जो गुरु और पवित्र विद्वान ब्राह्मणों से अहंकार युक्त बातें करते हैं वे भी धन और संतान से हीन होते हैं| भ्रष्टाचार करने वाला, चंडाली से भोग करने वाला, दुष्ट की सेवा करने वाला और जो नीच मनुष्य की सेवा या संगति करते हैं, उन सभी के पाप प्रबोधिनी एकादशी के व्रत से नष्ट हो जाते हैं| जो इस व्रत को विधि पूर्वक करता है , उसके अनंत जन्मों के पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं|

भगवान की प्रसन्नता का यह मुख्य साधन है| इसके व्रत से मनुष्य को आत्मा का बोध होता है| मनुष्य जैसे ही अपने मन में देव प्रबोधिनी एकादशी के व्रत को करने का संकल्प मात्र करता है, उसके सौ जन्मों के पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं तथा जो मनुष्य प्रबोधिनी एकादशी को रात्रि जागरण करते हैं, उनकी बीती हुई तथा आने वाली दस हज़ार पीढ़ियाँ स्वर्ग में जाती हैं| नरक में अनेक दुखों से छूटकर पितृ प्रसन्नता के साथ सुसज्जित होकर विष्णुलोक में जाकर सुख भोगते हैं| ब्रह्म हत्या आदि महान पाप भी इस व्रत के प्रभाव से नष्ट हो जाते हैं| जो फल समस्त तीर्थों में स्नान करने, गौ , स्वर्ण और भूमि दान करने से होता है , वही फल इस एकादशी के श्रद्धा युक्त विधिपूर्वक किए गये व्रत, भजन कीर्तन और शास्त्र चिंतन में रात्रि जागरण करने से मिलता है|

हे नारद ! इस संसार में उसी मनुष्य का जीवन सफल है , जिसने देव प्रबोधिनी एकादशी का व्रत किया है| इस संसार में जितने भी तीर्थ हैं , उन सबके स्नान दान आदि का फल इस व्रत से मिलता है तथा सारे तीर्थ व्रत करने वाले के घर में रहते हैं|

अतः मनुष्य को भगवान की कृपा प्राप्त करने हेतु देव प्रबोधिनी एकादशी का व्रत अवश्य करना चाहिए| जो मनुष्य इस एकादशी के व्रत को करता है, वही ज्ञानी , तपस्वी , योगी तथा जितेन्द्रिय है और उसी को भोग तथा मोक्ष प्राप्त होता है|यह भगवान विष्णु को अत्यंत प्रिय, मोक्ष के द्वार को खोलने वाली तथा उसके तत्व का ज्ञान देने वाली है| इसके व्रत के प्रभाव से मनुष्य पुनः जन्म नही लेता| मन, कर्म , वचन तीनो प्रकार के पाप इस व्रत को करने से और रात्रि को जागरण करने से नष्ट हो जाते हैं| देव प्रबोधिनी एकादशी के दिन जो मनुष्य भगवान की प्रसन्नतार्थ  स्नान, दान, तप व यज्ञादि करते हैं, उन्हे अक्षय पुण्य मिलता है|

हरि प्रबोधिनी एकादशी के दिन भगवान की पूजा करने और व्रत करने से मनुष्य के बालपन, यौवन और वृद्धावस्था के समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं| इस व्रत के बिना अन्य व्रत व्यर्थ हैं | इस एकादशी को रात्रि जागरण का फल चंद्र , सूर्य ग्रहण के समय स्नान करने के फल से एक हज़ार गुना अधिक होता है| मनुष्य जन्म से लेकर जो पुण्य करता है वह पुण्य प्रबोधिनी एकादशी के पुण्य के सामने व्यर्थ है| जो मनुष्य प्रबोधिनी एकादशी का व्रत नही करते उनके सब पुण्य व्यर्थ हैं| अतः हे नारद ! तुमको भी विधिपूर्वक और  और अटूट विश्वास के साथ इस व्रत को करना चाहिए|

जो मनुष्य कार्तिक मास में धर्म परायण होकर अन्न नही खाते, उन्हे चंद्रायण व्रत का फल प्राप्त होता है| कार्तिक मास  में भगवान दान से उतने प्रसन्न नही होते जीतने की शास्त्रों की कथाओं के सुनने से होते है|कार्तिक मास में जो भगवान विष्णु की कथा को पढ़ते या सुनते हैं या सुनाते हैं उन्हे सौ गायों के दान का फल मिलता है|

अतः अन्य सब कामो को छोड़कर कार्तिक मास में भगवान विष्णु की भक्ति देने वाली कथा पढ़नी या सुननी चाहिए | जो मनुष्य कल्याण के लिए कार्तिक मास  में हरि कथा कहते या सुनते हैं , वे स्वयं अपना और कुटुम्ब का क्षण मात्र में उद्धार कर लेते हैं और सौ गौदान का फल प्राप्त पाते हैं| शास्त्रों की कथा कहने और सुनने से दस हज़ार यज्ञो का फल मिलता है| साथ ही उनके सब पाप भस्म हो जाते हैं| जो नियमपूर्वक हरि कथा सुनते हैं, वे एक हज़ार गौदान  का फ़ल पाते हैं| जो विष्णु भगवान की कथा सुनते हैं वे सातो द्वीपो सहित पृथ्वी के दान करने का फल पाते हैं| जो मनुष्य प्रभु विष्णु की भक्ति पूर्वक कथा सुनते हैं और कथा वाचक ब्राह्मण की यथा चित्त पूजा कर सामर्थ्य के अनुसार दक्षिणा देते हैं वे उत्तम लोक को जाते हैं|

ब्रह्मा जी की यह बात सुनकर नारद जी बोले,” हे भगवान! इस एकादशी के व्रत की क्या विधि है और कैसा व्रत करने से क्या फल मिलता है? यह भी विस्तार पूर्वक समझाइये|

ब्रह्मा जी बोले,” हे नारद! ब्रह्ममूहूर्त में जब दो घड़ी रात्रि रह जाए तब उठें , शौच आदि से निवृत्त हो कर दन्त धावनादि करें | उसक बाद नदी, तालाब, कुँआ, बावड़ी या घर में ही , जैसा संभव हो स्नान आदि करें | फिर भगवान की पूजा करके कथा सुने और एकादशी व्रत का नियम ग्रहण करें|

उस समय भगवान को साक्षी मानकर विनय करें- “हे भगवान ! आज मैं निराहार रहकर व्रत करूँगा और दूसरे दिन भोजन करूँगा| आप मेरी रक्षा कीजिए| “

इस प्रकार विनय कर भगवान की पूजा करनी चाहिए| तत्पश्चात श्रद्धा और भक्ति से व्रत करें तथा रात्रि को भगवान आगे नृत्य , गीत , कथा, बाजे आदि का उपक्रम करना चाहिए|

प्रबोधिनी एकादशी के दिन कृपणता त्याग कर बहुत से पुष्प, फल, अगर, धूप आदि से भगवान का पूजन करना चाहिए| शंख के जल से भगवान को अर्ध्य दें| इसका समस्त तीर्थों से करोड़ गुना फल मिलता है| जो कार्तिक मास में बिल्व पत्र से भगवान की पूजा करते हैं उन्हे अंत में मुक्ति मिलती है | जो मनुष्य अगस्त्य के पुष्प से भगवान का पूजन करते हैं, उनके आगे इंद्र भी हाथ जोड़ते हैं| तपस्या करके संतुष्ट होने पर भी हरि भगवान जो नही करते, वह अगस्त्य के पुष्पों से अलंकृत होने पर करते हैं|

कार्तिक मास में जो मनुष्य तुलसी से भगवान का पूजन करते हैं| उनके दस हज़ार जन्मो के समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं| तुलसी के दर्शन करने, स्पर्श करने, तुलसी की कथा कहने, स्तुति करने, तुलसी का पौधा लगाने , जल से सींचने और प्रतिदिन सेवा करने वाले हज़ार करोड़ युग पर्यंत विष्णुलोक में निवास करते हैं| कार्तिक मास  में जो तुलसी द्वारा भगवान विष्णु का पूजन करता है , उसके दस हज़ार जन्मो के पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं| जो मनुष्य कार्तिक में वृंदा का दर्शन करते हैं वे एक हज़ार युग एक वैकुंठ में निवास करते हैं| जो मनुष्य तुलसी का पेड़ लगाते हैं उनके वंश में कोई निस्संतान नही होता | जो तुलसी की जड़ में जल चढ़ाते हैं , उनका वंश सदा बढ़ता रहता है | जिस घर में तुलसी का पेड़ हो उसमे सर्प देवता निवास करते हैं| यमराज के दूत वहाँ स्वप्न में भी नही विचरते|

जो तुलसी के पास श्रद्धा से दीप जलाते हैं, उनके हृदय में दिव्य चक्षु का प्रकाश होता है| जो शालिग्राम के चरणामृत में तुलसी मिलकर पीते हैं, उनके निकट अकाल मृत्यु नही आती| उनकी सारी व्याधियाँ नष्ट हो जाती हैं, पुनर्जन्म प्राप्त नही होता|

हे मुनि| रोपी हुई तुलसी जितनी जड़ों का विस्तार करती है, उतने ही तुलसी रोपण करने वाले के पुण्यों का विस्तार होता है| जिस मनुष्य की रोपण की हुई तुलसी की जितनी शाखा, प्रशाखा , बीज और फल पृथ्वी में बढ़ते हैं, उसके उतने ही बीते हुए कुल तथा आने वाले कुल दो हज़ार कल्प तक विष्णुलोक में निवास करते हैं| ऐसी पतित पावन तुलसी का पूजन ‘ ऊँ श्री वृंदाय नमः ‘ मंत्र से करना चाहिए|

समस्त मनोवांच्छाओं को पूरा करने वाले भगवान  कदंब पुष्प को देखकर अत्यंत प्रसन्न होते हैं| अतः जो कदंब के पुष्पों से भगवान श्री हरि की पूजा करते हैं, वे कभी यमराज को नही देखते| जो गुलाब के पुष्पों से भगवान की पूजा करते हैं, उन्हे मुक्ति मिलती है तथा अनंत पुण्य मिलता है| जो बकुल और अशोक के पुष्पों से भगवान का पूजन करते हैं, वे सूर्य चंद्रमा के रहते तक किसी प्रकार का शोक नही पाते| जो मनुष्य सफेद ये लाल कनेर के फूलों से भगवान का पूजन करते हैं उन पर भी भगवान अत्यंत प्रसन्न रहते हैं| जो भगवान पर आम की मंजरी चढ़ाते हैं, वे करोड़ों गौदान का फल पाते हैं| जो मनुष्य दूब के अंकुरों से भगवान पूजा करते हैं, वे पूजा के फल से सौ गुना फल पाते हैं|

जो भगवान की शमी पत्र से पूजा करते हैं, वे महाघोर यमराज के मार्ग को सरलता से पार कर लेते हैं| जो मनुष्य चंपा के फूलों से विष्णु भगवान की पूजा करते हैं वे आवागमन के चक्र से छूट जाते हैं| जो मनुष्य केतकी के पुष्प भगवान पर चढ़ाते हैं उनके करोड़ों जन्मो के पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं| जो मनुष्य पीले और रक्तवर्ण के कमल के पुष्पों से भगवान के पूजन करते हैं, उन्हे श्वेत द्वीप में स्थान मिलता है|

इस प्रकार रात्रि में भगवान का पूजन कर प्रातः काल होने पर नदी , तालाब आदि के शुद्ध जल में स्नान , जप तथा प्रातः काल के कर्म कर घर लौट विधिपूर्वक भगवान केशव का पूजन करें| व्रत की समाप्ति पर विद्वान ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराना चाहिए और दक्षिणा देकर गुरु का पूजन करना चाहिए | ब्राह्मणो को भी दक्षिणा दें|

हे राजन! रात्रि में भोजन करने वाले मनुष्य ब्राह्मणो को भोजन करायें और स्वर्ण सहित बैल का दान दें| जो मनुष्य यात्रा स्नान करते हैं उन्हे दही और शहद का दान कारण चाहिए| जो मनुष्य माँसाहारी नही हैं वे गौ का दान करें | आँवले से स्नान करने वाले मनुष्य को दही और शहद का दान करना चाहिए | जो मनुष्य फलों का त्याग करे वह उन्ही फलों का दान करे| तेल छोड़ने पर घी और घी छोड़ने पर दूध, अन्न छोड़ने पर चावल का दान करना चाहिए| जो मनुष्य इस व्रत में भूमि शयन करते हैं, उनको शय्या दान सब सामग्री सहित देनी चाहिए| जो मनुष्य मौन व्रत धारण करे उसे ब्राह्मण और ब्राह्मणी को घृत तथा मिठाई का भोजन कराना चाहिए और उसे स्वर्ण सहित तिल का दान करना चाहिए | जो मनुष्य बाल रखते हैं उन्हे दर्पण का दान करना चाहिए|

जो मनुष्य कार्तिक मास में जूता नही पहनते उन्हे एक जोड़ा जूता दान करना चाहिए| जो मनुष्य कार्तिक मास में नमक का त्याग करते हैं, उन्हे शर्करा दान करनी चाहिए| जो मनुष्य कार्तिक शुक्ल एकादशी से पुण्या तक देव स्थानो में दीपक जलाते हैं तथा नियम लेते हैं , उन्हे व्रत की समाप्ति पर ताम्र अथवा स्वर्ण के दिए को घृत और बत्ती रखकर विष्णु भक्त ब्राह्मण को दान देना चाहिए| यदि यह संभव ना हो तो ब्राह्मणों का सत्कार करें|

एकांत व्रत में आठ कलश वस्त्र और स्वर्ण से अलंकृत करके दान करना चाहिए | यदि यह भी ना हो सके तो इसके आभाव में ब्राह्मणों का सत्कार सब व्रतों की सिद्धि देने वाल कहा गया है|

इस प्रकार ब्राह्मणों को विदा करें| इसके पश्चात स्वयं भी भोजन करें | चतुर्मास  में जिन वस्तुओं को छोड़ा हो उन्हे इस दिन से पुनः ग्रहण करना चाहिए|

हे राजन! जो मनुष्य इस प्रकार चतुर्मास व्रत को निर्विघ्न समाप्त करते हैं उन्हे फिर दुबारा जन्म नही मिलता| वे भगवान विष्णु की कृपा के अधिकारी हो जाते हैं| जिन मनुष्यों का व्रत खंडित हो जाता है, वे कष्ट पाते हैं और नरक को जाते हैं| व्रत भ्रष्ट हो जाने पर व्रत करने वाला शारीरिक कष्ट पाता है|

श्री कृष्ण बोले,” हे राजन! चतुर्मास की श्रद्धा सहित समाप्ति पर गृहस्थ और सन्यासी दोनो अक्षय फल के अधिकारी होते हैं| चतुर्मास मनुष्य को भगवान विष्णु की भक्ति के लिए सुअवसर है|भगवान विष्णु को उठाने के लिए साधक को बड़ी श्रद्धा और विश्वास के साथ प्रार्थना करनी चाहिए| यह पुण्यमयी एकादशी का व्रत करने वाले अपना जीवन धन्य मानते है|

इस कथा को सुनने और पढ़ने से सौ गौदान का फल प्राप्त होता है|

भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने कहा,” हे राजन, जो कुछ तुमने पूछा था, वह सब मैने बताया|”

Dev Prabodhini ekadashi is the last ekadashi of the year as next ekadashi is Utpanna ekadashi( The first Ekadashi when Ekadashi devi appeared first from Lord Vishnu)and it also the auspicious day wehn Devas Lord Vishnu wakes up from his yogic sleep.All auspicious activities are started from this day. Swaminarayan Sampraday has mentioned the importance of fast on Dev Prabodhini ekadashi as follows:

Lord Shri Krishna said, “O Dharmaraj Yudhishthir, now I will tell you the greatness of Deva Prabodhini Ekadashi.Once a conversation happened between Brahma ji and Devarshi Narada about Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi. Listen to the story of Ekadashi which absolves sins, grants good merits and finally salvation. Listen to the greatness of Ekadashi:

The holy influence of Ganges, pilgrimages, rivers and oceans combined also cannot fathom the greatness of Kartik Shukla Paksha Prabodhini Ekadashi. Prabodhini ekadashi  rendres immense great merits(Punyas). The Punya(god merits) attained by Prabodhini ekadashi is equivalent to performing 1000 Ashwamedh Yajnas and 100 Rajasooy Yajnas.

Devarshi Narad asked Lord Brahma, “O Father! How much merit do you get from eating one meal, by eating food at night only and fasting all day on Prabodhini Ekadashi? Kindly tell us in detail.”

Lord Brahma said, “O Son, by eating one meal in day, the sins of one birth are eradicated. Eating food at night only erases the sin of two birth and if the person does not eat whole day and night then the sins of 7 births are destroyed completely.   The thing which can not be found in all the three realms  and could not be even seen, that also can be  obtained by keeping the fast of Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi. Anyone who just harbour the desire of  fasting of Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi, even his sins from his one hundred births are erased.

( Here one would wonder that by fasting completely on Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi the sins of 7 birth are destroyed and by just keeping the desire Dev Prabodhini varat his sins from 100 births are destroyed?? Why such disparity between the actual act of keeping the fast and just the desire of keeping the fast. We Should note that sins are of varying intensity and degrees, some sins cannot be erased just like that while other are minor offence which can be rather  nullified by simpler means. As per our understanding the complete fasting without water in Dev Prabodhini ekadashi will eradicate all kind of sins of your previous 7 births while the desire to do the vrat will nullify rather minor offences sins from hundred births.)

The Fast of Dev Prabodhini destroys the great heap of sins as big as like  Meru and Mandarachal mountains. Even the sins of multiple births are destroyed immediately. Like a large heavy pile of cotton is  consumed by a small spark of fire, similarly a small act of a virtuous deed, done  by  full devotion,  faith and  methodically performed a gives limitless rewards.

This punya becomes firm as  mountain. Those who observe this Prabodhini Ekadashi according to their best ability and with full procedure, they get full results.

But a fast carried out without proper procedure will not give complete merit. Man does not get the desired result from such fasting.  The unbeliever, the atheist, the Veda slanderer, the slanderer of the other holy scriptures, those who abduct other’s women and those who perpetually remain engaged in sinful activities, a treacherous Brahman and Shudra, people who sleep with other woman are all alike a sinful Chandala. They destroy all their good merits. Those who conjugate with a widow or a brahmin lady, they destroy their own family as well.

People who sleep with other’s wives they do not children and all their all good deeds accumulated from previous birth are destroyed. Those who talk arrogantly with Brahmins, Gurus and holy scholars are also devoid of their wealth  and children.People who are corrupt, those who are involved in illicit relationship with Chandli, who serve the wicked people and who serve or associate with the lowly people; All of the abovementioned people’s sins are destroyed by the fasting of the Prabodhini Ekadashi. Those who practice this fast with right procedure and full devotion, their sins from several births are destroyed.

This is the is one of the best way to attain  God’s happiness & his grace. By fasting on Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi teh devotee gets a relief in attachment to his mortal body  and becomes more aware about his soul. Those who keep Chaturmas fast, keep night vigil on Ekadashi and stay wake their 10000 generations in past and in upcoming future become eligible for attaining heaven. His departed ancestors are freed from hellfire and go to abode of Lord Vishnu happily. Even the ghastly sins like the murder of  Brahman is also ameliorated by this fast. The merit which is attained by taking ablutions in all holy tirthas, donating cow & land & gold;  same merits are attained by just observing Dev Prabodhini vrata and staying awake at night by singing praises of Lord Vishnu and reading holy scriptures.

O Narada! The life of those is blessed  who have kept the fast of God Prabodhini Ekadashi. One gets the merits of  bathing & charity in all tirthas of this world and all the pilgrims live in the place of  of the person who fasts on Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi.

Therefore, in order to receive God’s grace, one should perform the vow of Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi. The person who performs the vrata of this Ekadashi is  wise, the ascetic, the yogi and is ‘Jitendirya’ (has controlled his senses)  and he  receives liberation and salvation. This Ekadashi is very dear to Lord Vishnu dearly, opens the door of salvation and gives knowledge of his true form. Person is freed from the cycle of death and birth with the effect of its fast, He is not reborn again. Three types of committed by body, mind and speech are all destroyed by keeping this fast and staying awake at night. The people who take bath, donate, do penance , perform Yajna for the happiness of Lord, they get infinite merits.

On the day of Hari Prabodhini Ekadashi, all sins of the childhood, youth and old age are destroyed by worshiping Lord Vishnu and keeping fast. All other fasts are no good, if Prabodhini Ekadashi fast is not done, such is the great merits of this fast. The merit of staying awake at night is a thousand times more than the merit of bathing at the time of moon and sun eclipse. Whatever the good deeds the person does from birth the merit of those deeds are lackluster in front of Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi. People who do not keep fast of Prabodhini all their punyas are like nothing. Therefore O Narada! You should also do this fast with a sincere and unwavering faith.

People who do not eat grains of non veg in Kartik month, they get the merits of great ‘Chandrayaan vrata’. In the month of Kartik, God is pleased with the study and listening of sacred scriptures of puranas even more than the charity.  Devotees who read or listen to the story of Lord Vishnu , in Kartik month, they  receive the merit of donations of hundred cows.

Therefore one should leave all other worldly affairs  and read or listen the stories which increase devotion to Lord Vishnu. Those who say or listen to Shri Hari stories in Kartik month for their welfare , they ensure deliverance of themselves and their family immediately and earn the merit of  donating  hundred cows. Telling and listening to the stories of Shastras gives tens of thousand of yagyas. At the same time all their sins are destroyed. Those who listen to the Hari Katha regularly, they get the merits of donating a thousand cows.

Devotee get the merit of donation the entire earth with all 7 continents by listening the stories of lord Vishnu. Those who listen to devotional recitation of Lord Vishnu and give the gifts and dakshina to the priest story teller after venerating him, they go to the superior divine abodes.

Narada said, “O Lord, what is the procedure of fasting on this Ekadashi and what kind of results are attained by fasting in different procedures?Kindly explain this in detail too.

Those who listen to the story of Lord Vishnu find the fruits of donating the earth, including the Sato islands. Those who listen to devotional recitation of Lord Vishnu and give the dakshina according to the power of the story reader worshiping the mind of Brahmana, they go to the good people.

Narada said, “O Lord, what is the method of fasting this Ekadashi and how does it get results from fasting? Explain it in detail too.

After listening to Narad ji, Lord Brahmaji said, “O Narada! On the morning before Ekadashi, one should get up  2 Ghadis (One Ghadi=24 mins approx, 2 Ghadis=48 mins) times before Brahmamuhurta at night, then should get ready after getting free from daily chores of nature’s call,brushing teeth  etc. After that he should take bath in river, pond, well, bawadi or at house only, whatever best is  possible for him. Then he worship Lord Vishnu, listen to the Ekadashi story and take the oath of Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi Vrata.

At that time, Devotee should  accept the Lord Vishnu as a witness and should promise saying, “O God! Today I will fast ,staying without food and I will eat for the next day after sunrise only. Please protect me.”

Thus, Lord Vishnu be worshiped and revered. After this, the devotee should fast with devotion and faith and  at the night he should sing devotional songs, dance, stories do devotional plays etc.

On the day of Prabodhini Ekadashi, one should worship God with lots of flowers, fruit, if, incense etc.. Offer Ardhy to Lord with the water from conch. This give merits 10 millions times than all pilgrimage . Those who worship God in the Kartik month by the leaves of Bilva get salvation at the end. Devraj Indra also reveres the people who worship God with the flower of Agastya. Even after doing penance and being satisfied, God does not do what  he would do when he is embellished with the flowers of Agastya.

In the Kartik month, the people who worship God by Holy basil (Tulasi). All the sins of their ten thousand births are destroyed. Those who see or touch Holy basil, tell the story of Tulasi,  plant & water it and offer service to Holy Basil the reside in abode of Lord Vishnu for Hundred million years. Devotees who  worship of Lord Vishnu by Tulsi leaves in the Kartik month, their  sins of ten thousand births are destroyed. Those who see Vrinda(Tulasi) in holy Kartik month , they live in Vaikunth, for a thousand years.

Those who plant basil trees, there is no one remains childless in their progenies. Those who offer water in basil root, their bloodline always keeps growing. The power of snake god dwells in the house where there is a Holy basil tree. God of death and hell-Lord Yamraj’s attendants do not even dare to come in such house.

Those who burn the lamp near Holy Basil,with reverence,  the light of the divine eye appears in their heart gradually. Those who drink Tulsi with Charamamrit of Shaligram, do not die of premature death. All their diseases are destroyed. They do not need to reincarnate again on this earth.

O Devarshi! As much the roots branches of the seeded Tulasi extend , that much the Holy basil planter’s Punyas also expand as wel. As many the number of branches, sub-branches, seeds, fruits grow, the same number of past and the total number of those upcoming generations of the Tulasi Planter, reside in Vishnulok till two thousand ‘Kalpas’(A kalpa is a day of Brahmā, and one day of Brahmā consists of a thousand cycles of four yugas, or ages: Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dvapara Yuga and Kali Yuga). The worship of such holy Tulsi should be done with ‘Om Shree Vrinday Namah‘ mantra.

God, who fulfills all the desires, is very happy to see the Burflower (Kadamb flower). Therefore, those who worship Lord Sri Hari from the flowers of Burflower, never see Yamraj-The Lord of death and hell. Those who worship God with rose flowers, they get liberation and they get infinite Punya. Those worshiping God with the flowers of Bakul (Maulshri-Medlar)and Ashoka, they do not find any kind of sorrow until there is  Sun & Moon in the sky. God is also very pleased with those who are worshiping God by the flowers of White or Red Kaner.

Those who offer mango flower on God, they get the punya of donating of ten millions of cows. Those who worship God by the seeds of Bermuda grass(Durva), they get hundred times the merits of worship.

Those who worship God’s Ghaf leaves (Shami leaves), they easily pass the dreaded path of Yamaraja. The people who worship Lord Vishnu from the flowers of Champa are exempted from the cycle of birth and death. Those who offer the flowers of Ketaki (Keora) to God, their sins of tens of millions of births are destroyed. The people who worship God with the beautiful yellow and red lotus flowers , they get place in the Shweta island of Lord Vishnu.

After worshiping God at the night in above mentioned way, in the early morning,the devotee should be free from his daily chores, should take  bath in  the pure water of river, pond etc, return home and then should worship Lord Keshava with full devotion .

At the end of the fast, the devotee should feed learned Brahamans & Guru and offer them Dakshina.

O King! Those who kept the varat of eating only at night should feed Brahmanas and should donate Ox with Gold.  People who go on holy pilgrimage and take holy bath they should donate curd and honey. People who remained without non-veg food should donate cow. The man who had kept the varat of bathing with sacred Amla fruits they should donate the curd and honey. Person who had left eating various fruits should donate the same fruits.

People who left they should donate Ghee, those who left Ghee they should donate milk, ths show left grains  they should donate rice. Those who kept the vow of sleeping on ground they should donate bed , with all its accessories. The person who kept the vow to maintain silence they  should  feed to the Brahmin & his wife with sweets madhe from ghee and should donate sesame seeds with gold. Those who kept the vow of uncut hair in Chaturmas they should donate a mirror.

Those who do not wear shoe in the Kartik month should donate a pair of shoe. Those who sacrifice salt in Kartik month, they should donate sugar. Those people who burn lamp in God places places from Kartik Shukla Ekadashi to Punya Tithi, and take the rules, they should donate a copper or Gold lamp with wick to a devotee Brahaman of Lord Vishnu. If this is not possible, then just honor the Brahmans.

People who took the Vrata to be solitary they should donate  8 pitchers adorned with cloth  & Gold.If this is not possible then just the veneration and honour of Brahmans, is said to give the fulfillment of all the Vratas.

Thus, send the Brahmins satisfied. After this eat food yourself. Items which were left in Chaturmas vratas you can start using them from that day-Kartik Shukla Dwadashi.

O Rajan! Those people who the fourth month fasting of Chaturmas without any mistake, they do not get birth again. They receive Lord Vishnu’s never ending grace. The people who break their fast, they suffer and go to hell. When the fast is broken, still he continues to carry on with the corrupted fast then the person suffers from physical pain.

Shri Krishna Bole, “O Rajan! Both the householder and the renunciate Snayasis both  are entitled to ever lasting  merits . Chaturmas is a great opportunity for a person to attain the devotion & grace of  Lord Vishnu. The devotee should offer prayers with utmost devotion and faith it awake Lord Vishnu from his Chaturmasya sleep.  Those  who carry out the holy Vrata of Chaturmas consider themselves blessed.

Listening and reading this story gives the result of donating  hundred cows.

Lord Krishna said, “O Rajan, whatever you asked, I told you everything.”

Dev Prabodhini ekadashi is the last ekadashi of the year as next ekadashi is Utpanna ekadashi( The first Ekadashi when Ekadashi devi appeared first from Lord Vishnu)and it also the auspicious day wehn Devas Lord Vishnu wakes up from his yogic sleep.All auspicious activities are started from this day.
