Shodashopachara pooja procedure – षोडशोपचार पूजा विधि

भगवान श्री कृष्ण एवम् श्री विष्णु की षोडशोपचार पूजा विधि – Lord Shri Krishna’s & Lord Shri Vishnu’s Shodashopachara pooja procedure

Shodashopachara pooja and Panchopachara pooja are two main procedures to worship all major Gods in Hinduism.Shodashopachara pooja is more elaborate and used on Diwali, Holi, Navaratri and all other major festivals to appease our Ishta Deva/Devis. We shall  elaborate on Shodashopachara pooja in this post. Panchopachara pooja will be taken separately in another post.

Shodashopachara pooja include the service of Lord with sixteen pooja articles. These steps and articles are mentioned below. Here we have given mantra keeping Lord Krishna in mind. However the pooja for other deities like Lord Shiva, Vishnu etc is on similar steps but the pooja articles or mantras will vary for them or any other deities.

Name of these steps 16 steps is as follows:

(1.)ध्यान & आवाहन , (2.) आसन , (3.) पाद्य , (4.) अर्घ्य और आचमन,  (5.) स्नान , (6.)वस्त्र ,  (7.) यज्ञोपवीत , (8.) सुगंध , (9.)अक्षत , (10.) पुष्प , (11.) धूप , (12.) दीप ,  (13.) नैवेद्य , (14.) ताम्बूल ,  (15.) दक्षिणा , (16.) आरती और क्षमा प्रार्थना

(1.)Meditate on deity & Invitation , (2.) Offer Seat, (3.) Wash feet of deity, (4.) Offer ardhy and water to drink,  (5.) Bathe, (6.)Cloth,  (7.) Offer Sacred thread ‘Yajnopaveet’, (8.) Sandal paste, (9.)Offer Akshat-‘Unbroken rice grains’, (10.) Flower, (11.) Incense, (12.) Lamp,  (13.) Offer fruits and navideya, (14.) Betel leaf,  (15.) Offer gift/money, (16.) Perform Arati & ask for forgiveness

There are mantras for each and every step in pooja. It is good to know these mantras in pooja if you are performing a shodashopachara pooja. As this is a detailed pooja and it is important to recite the mantras. However some people insist that even you cannot remember all mantras you an just state the name of the article you are offering to Lord. Afterall Lord Krishna is hungry of devotion and love of the devotee. If the sodashopachara pooja is being performed by a learned Pandit they most likely these mantras will be recited. We have given the meaning of the mantras so that you will know what is happening in pooja from next time onwards in case if you already are not aware of  it. Here are all 16 steps with mantras for every step::

(1.) ध्यान & आवाहन (Dhyan Mantra & Avahan(Picturise deity in mind and invitation for pooja) :

(i) Dhyan Mantra:

नमोस्त्व अनंताय सहस्त्र मूर्तये, सहस्त्रपादाक्षि शिरोरु बाहवे। सहस्त्र नाम्ने पुरुषाय शाश्वते, सहस्त्रकोटि युग धारिणे नम:।।(Namostva anantay sahastr murtaye sahastr padakshi shirorubahave | Sahastr namne purushay shashvate sahastr koti yug dharine namah||)

Meaning: This is referring to the Vishwaroop from of Lord Vishnu, which was also shown by Lord Krishna to Arjun in Mahabharata) I bow down to the infinite, who has thousands of forms, who has thousands of legs, eyes, heads and hands| The one who is known by thousands of names , has always been and who propels thousands and  crores of yugas.

(ii) Avahan Mantra (Mantra to invite Lord) :

आगच्छ भगवन् ! देव स्थाने चात्र स्थिरो भव। यावत् पूजां करिष्येहं तावत् त्वं संनिधौ भव।।

(Aagschh Bhagawan! Dev sthaane chaatr sthiro bhav| Yavat poojam karishyeh taavat tvam sannidhau bhav||)

Meaning: Dear Lord, Please come and please be seated. We wish to worship you , kindly be with us.

(2.) आसन (Asan -Offering seat) :

Mantra 1-अनेक रत्न संयुक्तम नाना मणि गणान्वितम। इदम हेममयम दिव्यासनम् प्रति गृह्यताम्॥(Anek Ratna sanyuktam nana mani ganaanvitam| Idam hem-mayam divyasanam prati grihyataam||)

Meaning: Dear Lord, Pleas be seated on this adorned asana. Please accept this seat.

Mantra 2– श्री भगवान वासुदेव चरण कमलेभ्यो नमः। आसनार्थे पुष्पाणि समर्पयामि || (Shri Bhagwan Vasudev charan kamalebhyo namah| Asanarthe pushpam samarpayami||)

Meaning: I bow to Lord Vasudeva. We offer the flower to as seat. Please be seated.

Offer decorated cloth or cushion as seat. In case you You can offer a flower as a seat to God .

(3.)पाद्यम् (Padyam -Offering water to wash feet of Lord):

Mantra 1: गंगोदकम् निर्मलम् पादप्रक्षालनार्थाय दत्तम मे प्रतिगृह्यताम् || (Gangodakam nirmalam pad prakshalanarthaay dattam me prati grihyataam||)

Meaning: O Lord! I am offering the pure ganges water for cleansing your feet. Please accept my offering.

Mantra 2: गंगादि सर्व तीर्थेभ्य आनीतम तोय मुत्तमम। पाद्यार्थम ते प्रदास्यामि ग्रहाण परमेश्वर॥ ( Gangadi sarv tirthebhy aaneetam toy muttamam | padyaartham te pradasyaami grahaan Parameshwara||)

(4.) अर्घ्य और आचमन (Ardhya and Achaman)

(i) अर्घ्य (Ardhya)

गन्ध पुष्प अक्षतैर्युक्तम अर्घ्यम् सम्पादितम मया। ग्रहाण त्वम् प्रभु प्रसन्ना भव सर्वदा॥( Gandh pushp akshatairyuktam ardhyam sampaditam maya|Grahaan tvam prabhu prasanna bhav sarvada||)

Meaning: Dear Lord! I am offering ardhya water mixed with flower and fragrance| Kindly accept my offering and be pleased|

पानी में लाल चन्दन घिसकर मिलालें,फ़ूल डाल लें,और चावल मिलाकर Bhagawan के हाथों में लगायें|

(ii) आचमन  (Achaman)

कर्पूरेण सुगन्धेन वासितम स्वादु शीतलम्। तोयम आचमनीयार्थम ग्रहाण परमेश्वर॥ (Karpuren Sungandhen vaasitam swaadu sheetalam | Toyam achamaneeyartham grahaan Parameshwar||)

Meaning: Dear Lord! I am offering sweet cold water mixed with the fragrance of camphor for your achaman.  O Supreme Lord!Please accept my offering.

(कोरे घडे से निकाला हुआ ठंडा जल,कपूर मिलाकर देव को प्रार्थना करके उनको आचमन के लिये चढायें)

(5.) स्नान (Bath)

(i)जल  स्नान (Water bath)

मन्दाकिन्यास्तु यद्वारि सर्वपापहरम शुभम्। तदिदम कल्पितम देव स्नार्थम प्रतिगृह्यताम्॥ (Mandakinyaastu yadvaari  sarvapapaharam shubham| Tadidam kalpitam dev snaartham pratigrihyataam||)

Meaning: O Ganges(Mandakini) your water removes all sins and giver of auspiciousness. I am offering same water for your bath.  O Lod, kindly accept it.

(गंगाजल या पवित्र नदी का जल लेकर प्रतिमा को स्नान करवाने का क्रम करें)

(ii)स्नानांग-आचमन (Achaman during bath)

स्नानान्ते पुनराचमनीयम जलम् समर्पयामि। (Snanante punarachamaneeyam jalam samarpayaami||)

Meaning : Lord, post your bathing, I am offering you water for achaman again.

स्नान के बाद आचमन के लिये शुद्ध कपूर मिला जल दें

(iii)दुग्ध स्नान (Milk bath)

कामधेनु सम उत्पन्नम सर्व ईशाम जीवनम परम्। पावनम यज्ञ हेतुश्च पय: स्नानार्थम अर्पितम्॥ ( Kamdhenu sam utpannam sarv Ishaam jeevanam Param| Pavanam yajn hetushch payah snanartham arpitam||)

Meaning: Milk is produced by Kamdhenu , the divine cow. I am offering you milk for bath.

गाय के दूध से स्नान करवायें

(iv) दधि स्नान (Curd bath)

पयस अस्तु समुदभूतम मधुर अम्लम शशि प्रभम्। दध्यानीतम मया देव स्नानार्थम प्रति गृह्यताम्॥ ( Payas astu samud bhootam madhur amlam Shashi prabham| Dadhyaneetam maya dev snanartham prati grihyataam||)

Meaning: Curd is derived from ilk but is sour in taste and has luster like moon light. O Lord, I am offering curd for your bath.

गाय के दही से स्नान करवायें

(v)घृतस्नान (Ghee bath)

नवनीत सम उत्पन्नम सर्व संतोष कारकम्। घृतम तुभ्यम प्रदस्य अमि स्नानार्थम प्रति गृह्यताम्॥ (Navaneet sam utpannam sarv santosh kaarakam| Ghritam tubhyam pradasy ami snanartham prati grihyataam||)

Meaning: Ghee is derived from milk as curd and gives satisfaction of all inds. O lord I am offering you ghee for bath.

गाय के घी से स्नान करवायें

(vi)मधु स्नान( Honey bath)

पुष्प रेणु सम उत्पन्नम सुस्वादु मधुरम मधु। तेज: पुष्टि सम आयुक्तम स्नार्थम प्रति गृह्यताम्॥ ( Pushp renu sam utpannam su swadu madhuram madhu| Tej pushti sam aayuktam snanartham prati grihyatam||)

Meaning:  Honey is derived from the nectar of flower and is sweet and taste.Honey is giver of health and luster, I am offering the same for your bath. Please accept it.

शहद से स्नान करवायें

(vii)शर्करा स्नान (Sugar bath)

इक्षुसार सम अद्भुताम शर्कराम् पुष्टिदाम शुभाम।मल अपहारिकाम् दिव्याम स्नानार्थम प्रति गृह्यताम्॥ (Ikshu saar sam adbhutaam sharkaraam pushtidaam shubhaam| Mal apahaarikaam divyam snanartham prati grihyataam||)

Meaning: Sugar is derived from the sugarcane juice and and provides energy , it removes the coarseness . I am offering sugar for you bath, please accept it.

शक्कर से स्नान करवायें

(viii) पंचामृत स्नान (Panchamrit bath- Bath with 5 things)

पयो दधि घृत चैव मधु च शर्करान्वितम्। पंचामृतम मय आनीतम स्नानार्थम प्रति गृह्यताम्॥ (Payo dadhi ghrit chaiv sharkaraanvitam|Panchamritam may aaneetam snanartham prati grihyatam||) 

Meaning: O Lord! I am offering Milk, Curd, Ghee, Honey and Sugar mixed as pacnhamrit for your bath. Please accept y offering.

(किसी दूसरे बर्तन में दूध,दही,घी,शहद,शक्कर मिलाकर पंचामृत का निर्माण करें और किसी कांसे या चांदी के पात्र में इसी पंचामृत से स्नान करवायें)

(ix) गन्धोदक स्नान (Sandal-Incence bath)

मलयाचल सम्भूतम चन्दन अगरु मिश्रितम्। सलिलम देव देवेशि शुद्ध स्नानाय गृह्यताम्॥ ( Malayachalam sambhootam chandan agaru mishritam | Salilam dev deveshi shuddh snanaay grihyataam||)

Meaning: O Lord I am offering water mixed with fragrant sandal from Malay mountain sandal & incense for your bath. Please accept.

सफ़ेद चंदन लकडी वाला घिसकर और अगर को पानी में घिस कर एक बर्तन में मिलाकर स्नान करवायें|

(x) शुद्धोदक स्नान ( Bath with pure water to cleanse)

शुद्धम यत सलिलम दिव्यम गंगाजल समम स्मृतम्। समर्पितम मया भक्त्या स्नानार्थम प्रति गृह्यताम्॥ (Shuddham yat salilam divyam Gangajal samam smritam| Samarpitam maya bhaktya snanartham prati grihyataam||) 

Meaning:  O Lord I am offering pure Ganges water for cleansing bath, please accept it.

(शुद्ध जल से स्नान करवायें,और स्नान करवाने के बाद आचमन के लिये वही कपूर मिला शीतल जल दें)

(6.)वस्त्र (Cloth):

शीत-वातोष्ण-सन्त्राणं लज्जाया रक्षणं परम् | देहा-लंकारणं वस्त्रमतः शान्ति प्रयच्छ में || (Sheet-Vaatoshn-Santraanam Lajjaaya Rakshanam Param |
Deha-Lankaaranam Vastramatah Shanty Prayachchha Men ||)

Meaning:  Cloth protect from cold, wind and protect honour and adorn the body.We offer it you. O Lord ! Please accept it.

Bhagvan Devki Nandan ki pooja ke dauran is mantra ko padhte huye Shri Krishna Ji ko vastra samarpan karna chahiye-

(7.) यज्ञोपवीत  (Yagyopaveet-Sacred Thread worn on shoulders):

Yagyopaveet-Is a Sacred Thread worn on shoulders. It reminder of the vows a person takes/ Here offering it to Lord i symbolic as he has vowed to protect his devotees.

नव-भिस्तन्तु-भिर्यक्तं त्रिगुणं देवता मयम् | उपवीतं मया दत्तं गृहाण परमेश्वरः || (Nav-Bhistantu-Bhiryaktam Trigunam Mayam | Upveetam Maya Dattam Grihaan Parmeshwarah ||)

Meaning: This yagyopaveet ‘ three thead indicate thre gunas (Satv, Raj, Tam), Please take this yagyopaveet.

Is mantra ke dwara Nandlaal Bhagvan Shri Krishna ko yagyopaveet samarpan karna chahiye.

(8.) सुगंध -चन्दन:

ॐ श्रीखण्डम चंदनं  दिव्यम गंधाढ़्यं  सुमनोहरम्। विलेपनम सुर श्रेष्ठ चंदनं प्रति गृह्यताम्॥ (Om Shrikhand-Chandanam Divyam Gandhadhyam Sumanoharam | Vilepan Shri Krishna Chandanam Pratigrihayantaam ||)

Meaning: O Lord, this sandal is enamoured with great fragrance and is pleasant to have, Sandal is like a part of Lakshmi herself. Please accept this sandalpaset as tilak.

लकडी वाला लाल चन्दन शिला पर पानी के साथ घिस कर भगवान के माथे पर तिलक स्थान पर,दोनो कानों की लौरियों पर दोनो हाथों के बाजुओं पर और दोनो हाथों की हथेलियों पर लगायें|

(9.)अक्षत और कुमकुम  (Akshat & Kumkum):

अक्षताश्च सुरश्रेष्ठ कुंकुमाक्ता: सुशोभिता:| मया निवेदिता भक्त्या गृहाण परमेश्वर || (Akshatashch surashreshth kumkumaaktah sushobhitah| Maya nivedita bhaktya grihaan Parameshwar||)

Meaning: This Akshat(unbroken rice grains) are mixed with  red kumkum. Please accept it.

(10.) पुष्पमाला , तुलसी पत्र  और दूर्वांकुर (Flower Garland, Tulasi leaves and Durva grass):

(i) पुष्पमाला (Flower Garland)

माल्यादीनि सुगन्धीनि मालत्यादीनि भक्तित:। मय आर्ह्यतानि पुष्पाणि पूजार्थम प्रति गृह्यताम्॥ (Maalyaadini sugandheeni maalatyadeeni bhaktitah| May aarhyatani pushpani poojartham prati grihyataam||)

Meaning: This garland of flower gives great fragrance and is symbol of my devotion. Please accept my this offering.

अपने हाथ से लाल फ़ूलों की माला लाल रंग के धागे में अपने हाथों से पिरोना चाहिये,फ़ूल सौ से अधिक या कम नही हों,एक बार या प्रतिमा के अनुसार दो बार तीन बार माला को घुमाकर दाहिने से पहिनानी चाहिये|

(ii.) तुलसी पत्र (Tulasi leaves)

तुलसी हेमरूपां च रतनरूपां च मंजारीम् |भाव मोक्ष प्रदाम तुभ्यमर्पयामि हरिप्रियाम् || (Tulasi hemrupaam cha ratnaroopaam cha manjareem| Bhav moksh pradam tubhyam-arpayaami haripriyaam ||)

Meaning: Tulasi is like Gold and great adronment for Lord. Tulasi is giver of salvation. I am offering this tUalis leave to you or Supreme Lord.

(iii) दूर्वांकुर (Durva leaves)

तृणकान्त मणि प्रख्य हरित अभि: सुजातिभि:। दूर्वाभिराभिर्भवतीम् पूजयामि परमेश्वर॥ (Trinkant mani prakhy harit abhih sujaatibhi | Durvabhirabhirbhavatim poojayami Parameshwar||)

Meaning:  This druva is jewel of grasses, I am offering this durva for your pooja O Bhagwan!

किसी नदी या साफ़ स्थान से हरी और सफ़ेद दूब जिसके अन्दर ऊपर के भाग की तीन पत्तियों के अंकुर हों साफ़ करने के बाद अपने पास रखलें,रोजाना लाना सम्भव नही हो तो पहले लाकर किसी साफ़ सफ़ेद कपडे को गीला करने के बाद उसके अन्दर लपेट कर रख दें,पीली दूब या सूखी दूब कभी नही चढायें,१०८ या कम से कम १८ अंकुर रोजाना जरूर चढाये|

(11.) धूप (Incense):

वनस्पतिरसोदभूतो गन्धाढ्यो गन्ध उत्तम:।आघ्रेय: सर्वदेवानाम धूपोअयम प्रति गृह्यताम्॥ (Vanaspati Rasod Bhooto Gandhaadhyo Gandh Uttamah | Aaghreyah Sarv Devaanaam Dhoopodhyam Pratigrihayantaam ||)

Meaning: This Insce is produced from the juice of plants and is fragrant. May this fragrance be felt by al Devas.

धूप जो बनी हुई अगर तगर कपूर चन्दन के बुरादे से युक्त भगवान के सामने धूपें|

(12.) दीप (Lamp)

साज्यं च वर्ति संयुक्तम वाहिन्ना योजितम मया। दीपम गृहाण देवेशि त्रैलोक्य तिमिरापहम्॥ (Saajyam cha varti sanyuktam vaahinna yojitam maya| Deepam grihaan deveshi trailoky timirapaham||) 

Meaning:  This beautiful eartenlamp it with the burning vick and remover of darkness from all tree realms. Please accept this lamp.

शुद्ध रुई की दोहरी बत्ती बनायें,और आरती वाले पात्र में जिसमे कमसे कम दो अंगुल ऊंचा शुद्ध गाय का घी भरा हो,उसके अन्दर बत्तियों को डुबोकर अगरबत्ती से दीपक को प्रज्वलित करें,दीपक के अन्दर एक चांदी का या सोने का सिक्का डालें और भगवान को दिखायें,दीपक दिखाकर दीपक को अपने दाहिने रखें और हाथ साफ़ पानी से धो लें|

(13.) नैवेद्य और  ऋतुफ़ल (Naivedy & Fruits):

(i)नैवेद्य
शर्कराखण्ड खाद्यानि दधि क्षीर घृतानि च। आहारार्थम भक्ष्य भोज्यम नैवेद्यम प्रति गृह्यताम्॥ (Sharkarakhand khadyani dadhi ksheer ghritaani ch| Aharartham bhakshy bhojyam naivedyam prati grihyatam||)

Meaning: This naivedya is made by mixing sugar, curd, milk, ghee with  prasadam , Dear Lord Please accept this as food.

शक्कर और दही तथा खीर में घी मिलाकर नैवेद्य भगवान को आहार के रूप में अर्पित करें,नैवेद्य अर्पित करने के बाद आचमन के लिये कपूर मिला शीतल जल अर्पित करें,उसके बाद सादा पानी हाथ और मुंह धोने के लिये अर्पित करें|

(ii) ऋतुफ़ल
इदम फ़लम मया देवम् स्थापितम पुरतस्तव। तेन मे सफ़ल अवाप्तिर भवेज जन्मनि जन्मनि॥ (Idam Falam Mayaa Dev Sthapit Pur-Tastav | Ten Me Safalaanitti Bharavejanmani Janmani ||)

Meaning: Dear Lord, Please accept these fruits as my offerings.

जो भी फ़ल बाजार में आ रहे हों,उन्ही को बिना दाग धब्बे के लेकर आवें,और भगवान को भिन्न- भिन्न प्रकार के चढावें|

(14.) ताम्बूल और  पूगीफ़लम (Betel leaves & nuts):

ॐ पूगीफ़लम महाद्दिव्यम नागवल्ली दलैर्युतम्। एलालवंगसंयुक्तम ताम्बूलम प्रतिगृह्यताम्॥ (Om Poongifalam Mahadivyam Naagvallee Dalairyutam |
Elaa-lavang Sanyuktam Taambulam Pratigrihayantaam ||)

Meaning: Dear Lord, Please accept these betel nuts and betel leaf with clove.

इलायची लौंग सुपाडी और पान भगवान को अर्पित करें|

(15.) दक्षिणा (Offering gift of some modern form of money in coins):

दक्षिणाम् प्रेमसहिताम यथा शक्ति समर्पिताम्। अनन्तफ़लदामेनाम गृहाण परमेश्वर || (Dakshinam prem sahitaam yatha shakti samarpitaam| Ananat faladaamenaan grihan parameshwar||)

Meaning: O Parameshwar! I am offering this daskhina money as per my capacity with love. Kindly render us many fold reward.

मुद्रा में जो वर्तमान में चल रही हो,सिक्कों के रूप में भगवान को चढायें |भूलकर भी कागज की मुद्रा नही चढायें,अगर नही मिले तो केवल चावल बिना टूटे चढावें|

(16.) आरती और क्षमा प्रार्थना( Arati & Request for forgiveness):

(i) आरती /नीरांजनम  (Arati/Neeanjanam)

कदली गर्भ सम्भूतम कर्पूरम तु प्रदीपितम्। आरार्तिकमहम कुर्वे पश्य माम् वरदा भव॥( Kadali garbh sambhootam karpooram tu pradeepitam| Aarartikamaham kurve pashy maam varada bhav||) 

Meaning:  This camphor is derived from banana tree . I am offering arati from this camphor, kindly give us boon.

चलते हुये दीपक से पीतल के बर्तन में कपूर को जला लें और प्रभु भगवान की दाहिने बायें सात बार आरती उतारें,और आरती के बाद पानी को तांबे के लोटे में भरकर सात बार पानी से आरती उतारें|

(ii) क्षमा प्रार्थना (Request for forgiveness):

मन्त्रहीनं क्रियाहीनं भक्तिहीनं सुरेश्वर। यत्पूजितं मया देव परिपूर्णं तदस्तु मे।। (Mantrahinam kriyahinam bhaktihinam Sureshvar| Yatpoojitam maya dev paripoornam tadastu me||)

Meaning: Dear Parameshwar! I do not know mantras, neither procedure and nor do I have devotion in full. I have trie dto worship as per my best capacity, however it is , kindly please complete my pooja.

दिव्यमासनं मनसा परिकल्प्य समर्पयामि| पुष्पपितां पुष्पमालां मनसा परिकल्प्य समर्पयामि।
यानि कानि च पापानि जन्मांतरकृतानि च। तानी सर्वाणि नश्यन्तु प्रदिक्षणपदे पदे।।(Divyamasanam manasa parikalpya samarpayaami| Pushpitam pushpmala manasa pariklpya samarpayami| Yani kaani ch papani janmantarkritaani ch| tani sarvani nashyantu pradakshin pade pade||)

Meaning: O Lord, whatever sins I have committed in my this life or previous life, please destroy them all with every circumambulation I do of yours.
