युधिष्ठिर ने प्रश्न किया, हे जनार्दन! पौष मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का क्या नाम है और उस दिन किस देवता की पूजा की जाती है? उस एकादशी के देवता कौन हैं? यह सब समझाइये|
भगवान बोले ,” हे धर्मराज! मैं तुम्हारे स्नेह के कारण तुमसे यह कथा भी कहता हूँ| इस एकादशी के व्रत से भगवान विष्णु को शीघ्र प्रसन्न किया जेया सकता है| इतनी प्रसन्नता तो अधिक से अधिक दक्षिणा से पुष्ट यज्ञो द्वारा भी संभव नही| अतः इस व्रत को अत्यंत भक्ति और श्रद्धा से युक्त होकर करना चाहिए|
हे राजन! अब द्वादशी युक्त पौष एकादशी का महात्म्य सुनो|
पौष मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम सफला एकादशी है| इस एकादशी के देवता श्री नारायण हैं| यह सब कार्यों को सफल बनाने वाली है| इस एकादशी का विधिपूर्वक व्रत करना चाहिए और श्री मन नारायण का पूजन करना चाहिए | जिस प्रकार नागों में शेषनाग, पक्षियों में गरूड़, सब ग्रहों में चंद्रमा, यज्ञो में अश्वमेध और देवताओं में भगवान विष्णु श्रेष्ठ हैं , उसी तरह सब व्रतों में एकादशी श्रेष्ठ है| जो मनुष्य सदैव एकादशी का व्रत का व्रत करते हैं, वे भगवान विष्णु को परम प्रिय होते हैं| के कुंती पुत्र , अब मैं इस व्रत की विधि कहता हूँ|
विष्णु भगवान की पूजा हेतु ऋतु के अनुकूल फल, नारियल, नींबू, नैवेद्य, सुपारी आदि अर्पण करें और धूप , दीप, पुष्प आदि सोलह प्रकार को चीज़ों से पूजा करें| रात्रि को कीर्तन, पाठ करते हुए जागरण करें| इस एकादशी व्रत के समान यज्ञ, तीर्थ,दान तप तथा दूसरा कोई व्रत नही है| 5000 वर्ष तप करने से जो फल मिलता है, उससे भी अधिक पुण्य सफला एकादशी का व्रत करने से मिलता है|
हे राजन! अब मैं सफला एकादशी की व्रत की कथा विस्तार से कहता हूँ| इसे श्रद्धा पूर्वक ध्यान लगाकर सुनो|
चम्पावती नगरी में महिमान नाम का राजा राज्य करता था|उसके चार पुत्र थे| उन सब में लुम्पक नाम का राज-पुत्र महापापी था| वह सदा परस्त्री तथा वेश्यागमन व अन्य कुकर्मों में अपने पिता का धन नष्ट करता था| वह देवता, ब्राह्मण और वैष्णवों की निंदा किया करता था| सारी प्रजा उसके कुकर्मों से दुखी थी| अतः कुछ लोगो ने राजा से उसकी शिकायत की| जब राजा को अपने पुत्र के ऐसे कुकर्मों का ज्ञान हुआ तो उसने अपने इस पुत्र को राज्य से निकाल दिया| तब वह विचारने लगा किअब मैं किधर जाऊँ , क्या करूँ?
अंत में उसने चोरी करने का निश्चय किया | वह दिन में वन में रहता और रात्रि में अपने पिता की नगरी में चोरी करता| प्रजा को तंग करने और मारने का कुकर्म भी करता | सारी नगरी लुम्पक की करतूतों से भयभीत हो गयी| वन में भी वह पशु-पक्षी आदि मार कर खा जाता| | यदि कोई उसे चोरी करता पकड़ भी लेता तो राजा के भय से छोड़ देता| कभी-कभी प्रभु कृपा अनजाने में ही मिल जाती है|लुम्पक के साथ भी ऐसा ही हुआ | उस वन में, जहाँ लुम्पक छिप कर रहता था एक अत्यंत प्राचीन विशाल पीपल का वृक्ष था | उसी वृक्ष के नीचे पापी लुम्पक का डेरा था | वन के लोग इस पीपल वृक्ष को देव वरदान और वन को देवताओं का क्रीड़ा स्थल मानते थे| कुछ समय पश्चात पौष कृष्ण दशमी के दिन लुम्पक वस्त्रहीन होने से शीत के कारण सारी रात सो नही सका | उसके हाथ पैर अकड़ गये| वह रात्रि उसने जैसे-तैसे काटी और और सूर्योदय होने के पूर्व मूर्छित हो गया|
दूसरे दिन एकादशी को मध्यान्ह के समय सूर्य की गर्मी से उसकी मूर्छा दूर हुई| होश में आकर गिरता-पड़ता वह वन में भोजन की खोज में गया| परंतु अशक्त होने के कारण जीवों को मरने में असमर्थ था| तब वह वृक्षों से गिरे हुए फलों को बीनकर पुनः पीपल के वृक्ष के नीचे आया| उस समय तक सूर्यदेव अस्त हो चुके थे| अतः उसने उन फलों को लाकर पीपल के वृक्ष के नीचे रख दिया| शरीर के कष्ट और दुखों ने उसे ईश्वर का ध्यान कराया , वह रोकर कहने लगा कि,” भगवान यह सब फल आपको ही अर्पण हैं| आप ही इनसे तृप्त होइए |” रात्रि को भूख और पीड़ा के मारे उसे नींद भी नही आई | इस उपवास और जागरण से दयालु भगवान विष्णु अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए और उसके सब पाप नष्ट हो गये|
दूसरे दिन प्रातः एक अतिसुंदर दिव्यालंकारों से सज़ा घोड़ा उसके सामने आकर खड़ा हो गया| उसी समय आकाशवाणी हुई की,” हे राजपुत्र ! श्री नारायण की कृपा से तेरे सब पाप नष्ट हो गये हैं| अब तू अपने पिता के पास जाकर राज्य प्राप्त कर| तूने अनजाने में सफला एकादशी का व्रत किया , उसी के प्रभाव से तेरे समस्त पाप नष्ट हो गये| जैसे अग्नि की जानबूझकर या अनजाने में हाथ लगाने से हाथ जल जाते हैं, वैसे ही एकादशी का व्रत भूलकर रखने से भी अपना प्रभाव दिखाता है|”
ऐसी आकाशवाणी सुनकर वह बड़ा प्रसन्न हुआ और सुंदर दिव्य वस्त्र धारण करके ‘भगवान आपकी ज़य हो‘ कहकर अपने पिता के पास गया| उसके पिता ने प्रसन्नता से उसे अपने हृदय से लगा लिया| उसके पिता समस्त राज्य भार उसे सौंप कर स्वयं तप के लिए वन को चले गये|
अब लुम्पक शास्त्रानुसार राज्य करने लगा | उसकी स्त्री -पुत्र आदि सारा कुटुम्ब ही नारायण का परम भक्त हो गया | वृद्ध होने पर वह भी अपने मनोज नामक पुत्र को राज्य का कार्यभार सौंप कर तपस्या करने के लिए वन में चला गया और अंत समय में वैकुंठ को प्राप्त हुआ|
हे युधिष्ठिर ! जो मनुष्य भक्तिपूर्वक सफला एकादशी का व्रत करते हैं , उनके सब पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं और उनको अंततः मुक्ति मिलती है| जो मनुष्य इस सफला एकादशी का व्रत नही करते और इसका महत्व नही समझते , वे पूँछ और सींग से रहित पशु के समान हैं| इस सफला एकादशी के महात्म्य को पढ़ने अथवा श्रवण करने से मनुष्य को अश्वमेध यज्ञ का फल मिलता है|

Yudhisthira asked, ‘O Janadarna! What is the name of Ekadashi falling i dark fortnight of Paush month and which deity is worshiped on this day? Please tell us all this in detail.
Lord Krishna said, “O Yudhishthir, I will tell you this story because of your affection.” Lord Vishnu can be easily pleased this vow of Lord Ekadashi. Such happiness is not possible even by the Yajnas supported by ample o Dakshinas also. This fast should be done with utmost devotion and reverence.
O King! Now listen to the greatness of the Paush Ekadashi log with the Dwadashi.
The name of Ekadashi of the dark fortnight of Paush month is Safala Ekadashi. Lord Shri Narayana is the god of this Ekadash. This merit of this ekadashi accomplishes all the undertakings o devotee This Ekadashi should be practiced with all the procedure and Lord Narayana should be worshiped o this day. The way Sheshnag is superior in the serpents, Garuda in the birds, Moon in all the planets, Ashwamedha in Yagna and Lord Vishnu are the best in the gods, in the same way Ekadashi is superior in all the vows.
Those who always fast on Ekadashi, they are the most beloved to Lord Vishnu. O son of Kunti, I now will tell you the procedure of this fast.
Do Shodashopachara pooja of Lord Vishnu, Offer him seasonal fruits, coconut, lemon, banana, betel, etc. & and worship sixteen kinds of things like incense, lamp and flowers. Do kirtan in the night, and stay awake reading holy scriptures and singing praises of Lord Vishnu. There is no yajna , pilgrimage, charity and other fasting like like this Ekadashi fasting. The merit which is achieved by doing penaee or 5000 years, more merit is attained by just fasting of Ekadashi.
O King! Now I tell you the story of the fasting Ekadashi fast. Listen to it with reverence.
King of Mahiman ruled in the of Champawati city. He had four sons. Among them there was Lumpak, who was a great sinner. He always squandered his father’s wealth to prostitutes and in other misdeeds. He always used to condemn the Gods, Brahmins and Vaisnavas. Everyone in Kingdom was unhappy with his misdeeds. Some people gathered courage somehow and complained to the king.
When the king came to know about the misdeeds of his son, he banished his son from his kingdom. Lumpak started thinking , where should he go now, what should he do now?
In the end, he decided to steal. He lived in the forest during daytime and stole in his father’s city at night. He also tormented and terrorised people. The whole city was terrorised by the acts of Lumpak. Lumpak used to kill animals and eat them, in forest.
Even if someone caught him stealing ,they left him due the king’s fear. Sometimes the grace of the Lord is found unknowingly, and this is what happened with Lumpak. There was a very ancient large Peepal tree, in that forest, at the hideout of Lumpak. Lumpak used to stay under the same tree. The people of the forest used to consider this peepal tree scared boon gods and a forest as the playground for the gods. After some time, night before Paush Krishna Ekadashi,on Dashami, Lumpak could not sleep due to cold. He did not have any clothes. His body stiffened due to old. He spent the night somehow. By the time of sunrise he fainted.
He came to his consciousness , with the heat of sunlight, on the next day, midday on Ekadashi. He came to the senses gradually and went in search of food in the forest. But he could not hunt anything due to weakness. Then he olleted some fallen fruits from the trees and came under the Peepal tree.
Sun had already started setting by that time. So he brought those fruits and placed them under the Peepal tree. The pain and sufferings reminded him about God, he started crying and said, “O Lord, all these fruits are my offerings to you. Please be satisfied with it.” He could not sleep at night due to hunger and anguish. compassionate Lord Vishnu was very pleased with his fast and night vigil and consquently all his sins were destroyed.
The next morning, a beautiful horse adorned with jewels arrived in front of Lumpk. At heavenly voice said, “O son, all your sins are destroyed by the grace of Shri Narayana.” Now you go to your father and get the kingdom. You have unknowingly fasted Ekadashi, and all your sins are destroyed by its power. As the hands are burnt even if you touch it by mistake , likewise,fast of Ekadashi also shows its effect even if you keep it by mistake.
He was delighted to hear celestial announcement He was adorned with royal attire and went to his father cried in gratitude, ‘Or Lord you are great. Victory to you.’ His father happily embraced him on his return. His father passed on the Kingdom to him and himself retired to forest to do penance.
Now Lumpak began to rule righteously as per the scriptures . His entire family became the supreme devotee of Lord Narayana. When he grew old, he also handed his kingdom to his son Manoj and went to forest for doing penance, and in the end, he attained Vaikunth.
O Yudhishtir! Those who worship on Ekadashi with devotion and faith, their all sins are destroyed and they finally get salvation.
Those people are akin to animals without horns and tails , if they do not do Safala ekadashi fast and do not understand its importance. Devotee gets the reward of Ashwamedh Yagya, by reading or hearing the greatness of this Safala Ekadashi,.
