मार्गशीर्ष शुक्ल एकादशी-मोक्षदा एकादशी
धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर उत्पन्ना एकादशी का वर्णन सुनकर भगवान श्री कृष्ण से बोले,” हे भगवान! आप तीनो लोकों के स्वामी , सबको सुख देने वाले और जगत के पति हैं| मैं आपको नमस्कार करता हूँ| हे देव आप सबके हितैषी हैं, अतः मेरे संशय को दूर कीजिए | हे देवेश्वर कृपया मुझे बतायें की मार्गशीर्ष माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी को किस नाम से पुकारा जाता है? उस दिन कौन से देवता की पूजा की जाती है और उसकी विधि क्या है? भगवान! कृपया आप मेरे प्रश्नो का विस्तार पूर्वक उत्तर दे कर मेरा संशय दूर कीजिए|
यह सुनकर भक्त वत्सल भगवान श्री कृष्ण बोले,” हे धर्मराज तुमने अत्यंत उत्तम प्रश्न किया है| इसके सुनने से तुम्हारा यश संसार में फैलेगा, सो ध्यान पूर्वक सुनो| मार्गशीर्ष मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम मोक्षदा एकादशी है| इस एकादशी के व्रत में अपार शक्ति है|
इस दिन दामोदर भगवान की पूजा धूप, दीप नैवेद्य आदि से पूरे विधि विधान और श्रद्धा भक्ति से करनी चाहिए| यह एकादशी यथा नाम, तथा गुण अर्थात मोक्ष देने वाली है | इस व्रत का पालन करने वाला दशमी और एकादशी को निश्चित नियमों का पालन करे| मोक्षदा एकादशी के व्रत के प्रभाव से नर्क में गये हुए माता-पिता-पुत्रादि समस्त परिजन स्वर्ग के अधिकारी हो जाते हैं| यदि व्रती विधि पूर्वक व्रत करे और पुण्य-दान करे तो पितर तर जाते हैं| अब इस विषय में मैं पुराणो की एक कथा तुमसे कहता हूँ , ध्यान पूर्वक सुनो|
प्राचीन गोकुल नगर में वैखानस नाम के एक राजा राज्य करता था| उसके राज्य में चारो वेदो के ज्ञाता ब्राह्मण रहते थे| वह राजा अपनी प्रजा का पुत्रवत पालन करता था| वह धर्मात्मा और भक्त था| एक रात्रि को सोते समय राजा ने अपने पिता को नरक में पड़ा हुआ देखा तो उसे बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ| राजा इस स्वप्न से व्याकुल हो गया| प्रातः होते ही राजा ने विद्वान ब्राह्मणो को अपना स्वप्न सुनाया| राजा कहने लगा,” हे विद्वान ब्राह्मणो ! मैने अपने पिता को नरक में पड़े देखा है| उन्होने मुझसे कहा ,”हे पुत्र मैं नरक में पड़ा हूँ, यहाँ से तुम किसी प्रकार से मेरी मुक्ति करो| ” जब से मैने उनके ये वचन सुने हैं , मेरे चित्त में बड़ी अशांति है| दुख के कारण मेरा शरीर ताप रहा है| मुझे इस राज्य , पुत्र, स्त्री, धन , हाथी , घोड़े आदि से कुछ भी सुख नही होता | अब मैं क्या करूँ , कहाँ जाऊँ? इस दुख के कारण मेरा शरीर शिथिल होता जा रहा है| अब आप लोग कृपा करके कोई तप, दान , व्रत आदि बतायें , जिससे मेरे पिता की मुक्ति हो जाए| शस्त्रों के अनुसार उस पुत्र का जीवन व्यर्थ है जो अपने माता-पिता की सब प्रकार से सेवा ना कर सके और उनका उद्धार न कर सके| एक उत्तम पुत्र जो माता-पिता तथा पूर्वजों के काम आता है और उनका उद्धार करता है , वह अनेक मूर्ख पुत्रों से श्रेष्ठ है| जैसे एक चंद्रमा सारे जगत में प्रकाश करता है परंतु हज़ारों तारे नही कर पाते|”
राजा के ऐसे वचन सुनकर ब्राह्मण कहने लगे,” हे राजन! यहाँ समीप ही भूत-भविष्य-वर्तमान के ज्ञाता पर्वत ऋषि का आश्रम है, वे त्रिकालदर्शी हैं | आपके प्रश्नो का उत्तर वे भली-भाँति देकर आपकी समस्या का समाधान कर सकते हैं| वे आपको इसकी विधि बता देंगे|
यह सुनकर राजा तत्काल मुनि के आश्रम की ओर रवाना हो गया| उस आश्रम में अनेक शांत चित्त योग और मुनि तपस्या कर रहे थे| उसी जगह चारो वेदों के ज्ञाता पर्वत मुनि साक्षात ब्रह्मा के समान बैठे थे| राजा ने वहाँ जाकर मुनि को साष्टांग प्रणाम किया | पर्वत मुनि ने राजा से सांगो-पांग कुशल क्षेम पूच्ची| तब राजा बोले,” हे महर्षि! आपकी कृपा से मेरे राज्य में सब कुशल है| परंतु हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ अकस्मात एक विघ्न आ गया है, जिससे मेरे चित्त में अशांति हो रही है|”
सुनकर पर्वत मुनि ने एक क्षण के लिए अपनी आँखें बंद की और राजा से सविस्तार अपनी बात कहने को कहा| राजा ने अपना स्वप्न सुनाया,”मुझे रात्रि में अपने पिता का दर्शन हुआ| बेचारे यमदूतों के हाथों नरक यातना भोग रहे हैं|
भूत-भविष्य को विचारने वाले पर्वत मुनि बोले,” राजन! मैने योगबल से तुम्हारे पिता के सब कुकर्मों को जान लिया है| उन्होने पूर्व जन्म में कमातुर हो कर एक पत्नी को रतिदान दिया परंतु सौत के कहने पर दूसरी पत्नी को ऋतुदान माँगने पर भी नही दिया| तुम्हारे पिता ने अपनी पत्नियों में भेद किया , उसी पाप कर्म के फल से उनको नरक में जाना पड़ा|
तब राजा वैखानस बोले,” हे महात्मन मेरे पिता के उद्धार के निमित्त कोई उपाय बतायें|”
पर्वत मुनि बोले,” हे राजन! धर्म कर्म सब देरी से फल देने वाले हैं| शीघ्र वरदाता तो केवल शंकर जी प्रसिद्ध हैं, परंतु उनको प्रसन्न करना सरल नहीं है, समय लग जाएगा और तब तक तुम्हारे पिता को बहुत यातना भोगानी पड़ेगी| इसलिए सबसे सुगम और शीघ्र फल दाता मोक्षदा एकादशी का व्रत है| आप मार्गशीर्ष शुक्ल पक्ष की मोक्षदा एकादशी का व्रत करें और उसका पुण्य फल अपने पिता तो संकल्प कर अर्पित करें| उस एकादशी के पुण्य प्रभाव से अवश्य ही आपके पिता की नरक यातना से मुक्ति होगी|
मुनि के वचनो को सुनकर राजा अपने महल में आया और अपने कुटुम्बी जनो के साथ मोक्षदा एकादशी का व्रत किया | इस व्रत के पुण्य को राजा ने संकल्प पूर्वक अपने पिता को अर्पण कर दिया | राजा वैखानस द्वारा अर्पित मोक्षदा व्रत के पुण्य प्रभाव से राजा के पिता को मुक्ति मिल गयी और वह स्वर्ग को चला गया| स्वर्ग जाते हुए वह अपने पुत्र से बोला,”हे पुत्र! तेरा कल्याण हो|”
हे धर्मराज,” मार्गशीर्ष मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की इस मोक्षदा एकादशी का जो व्रत करते हैं, उनके समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं और अंत में स्वर्ग लोक को जाते हैं| इस व्रत से बढ़कर अधिक उत्तम मोक्ष देने वाला दूसरा कोई व्रत नही है| इस कथा को पढ़ने या सुनने से वाजपेय यज्ञ का फल मिलता है| यह व्रत मोक्ष देने वाला तथा चिन्तामणी मणि के समान है| जिससे सब कामनायें पूरी होती हैं|
श्री कृष्ण बोले,” हे धर्मराज! मानव की प्रबल आकांक्षा मोक्ष प्राप्त करने की होती है| इसके लिए मोक्षदा एकादशी का व्रत महत्वपूर्ण है| अतः विश्वास और श्रद्धा के साथ यह व्रत करके भगवान विष्णु की पूजा करनी चाहिए|
Margshirsh Shukl Ekadashi-Mokshada Ekadashi
After listening to the story of Utpanna Ekadashi Dharmaraj Yudhisthira made request to Lord Krishna, “O Lord, you are the lord of all three realms, bestower of happiness to everyone and the sole Lord of the world.” I bow down to you. O God, you are friend of everyone, so please clear my doubts. Please tell me, what is the name of the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of Margashirsha month? Which deity is worshiped on that day and what is its procedure? ? Kindly help and give answer in detail to clear my doubts away.”
Upon hearing this, the devotee doting Lord Shri Krishna said, “O Dharmaraj, you have asked a very good question. Listening to this will spread your glory to the world, listen carefully. Ekadashi falling in the bright fortnight of Margashirsha month is called Mokshada Ekadashi. There is immense power in this day. Lord Damodar should be worshipped by incense,lamp, fruits etc, following Shodashopachara pooja.
This Ekadashi is true to its name, and grants salvation(Moksh).
The devotee should follow the rules of Dashami and Ekadashi. All the relatives of the Devotee, including his prent, brothers, sons etc who went to hell are all elevated to heaven due to the influence of Mokshada Ekadashi fast. If the vratee performs the fast with devotion and dontes the merit then his ancestors are definitely liberated. Now I will tell you a story of Purana, listen carefully.
In ancient times a king named Vaakhanas ruled in Gokul city. Knowledgeable Brahmins of all four Vedas lived in his kingdom. The king used to treat his subject as his sons. He was a religious and a devotee of Lord. One night the king saw his father in hell in dream. King was shocked at his dream. The king was devastated by this dream. In the morning, the king told his dream to learned Brahmins.
The king said, “O Brahmins! I saw my father lying in hell in my dream today. He said to me, “Son, I am suffering in hell here. Do something and help me out of here anyhow.” I am deeply perturbed since I have heard these words. I have fever due to grief. I do not derive any happiness from this kingdom,wealth, son, wife, elephants, horses etc. Now what should I do, where should I go? My body is becoming oscitant,due to this sadness.
Now, please suggest me some charity, fasting, penance so that my father’s liberation could be assured. According to Shastras, the life of the son is in useless , who cannot serve his parents in all respects and cannot ensure their liberation. A good son who does the work for the deliverance of his parents and ancestors, is superior to many foolish sons. Like a moon can illuminate all the world but thousands of stars can not. “
Brahmin heard the King saying, “O Rajan, here is the heritage of auspicious Parvat Muni, who knows past , present and future. He can solve your problem and will give you correct answer to your questions. He will tell you the right thing and show you the correct path.”
The king immediately rushed towards Parvat Muni’s ashram, .
Many Yogis and Rishis were performing austerities at his hermitage. mellifluous holy chantings and homas (fire oblations) made entire place serene and beautiful. Parvat muni was sitting there like another Brahma, he knew all four Vedas and had done great penance .
King went to Parvat Muni and paid his respects. Pavat Muni welcomed King and asked King about his well being. Then the king said, “O Maharshi, by your grace everything is well in my kingdom. But a there a new problem has appeared suddenly, which is causing quite a disquiet to me.”
Parvat Muni closed his eyes for a moment and asked the King to elaborate the whole problem in detail. The king narrated his dream and said, “I saw my father in the night. He is suffering in hell and is being tormented at the hands of attendants of Yama.”
The Parvat Muni who could see the past and the future, said, “Rajan, I have learned about the misdeed of your father by Yoga. He had coitus with one of his wife but did not offer the same to his other wife in spite of her several requests as he was forbidden by his first wife. Your father made a discrimination between his wives and caused suffering to his pious wife. He had to go to hell with the consequences of that sinful act.
King Vaikhanas requested, “O Great Muni, Please tell me some remedy for the deliverance of my father.”
Parvat Muni said, “O Rajan, good deeds and religious acts all do not show immediate results. Only Lord Shiva is famous for granting quick boons, but it is not easy to please him. It will take time too, and till that time your father will keep on suffering terrible pain. The fastest and quickest giver of the result is the fast of Mokshada Ekadashi.
You should observe the fast of Mokshada Ekadashi of bright fortnight of Margashirshamonth and dedicate it to your father by giving him the due reward.Your father will be free from hell torture, with the merits gained by that Ekadashi .
After listening to the words of Muni, the king returned to his palace and did Mokshada Ekadashi vrata along with all his family members. The king offered the merit of this vrata for his father. The king’s father was freed from hell due to the virtue Mokshada Ekadashi fast, offered by King Vaikhanas and he went to heaven. As he ascended to heaven, he gave his blessings to his son, “Son, you have good welfare.”
Lord Krishna said, “O Dharmaraj Yudhisthira! Devotees who observe the vrata of Mokshada Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of the Margashirsha month, all their sins are destroyed and they go to the heaven. There is no other vrata as good as Mokshada Ekadashi to attain salvation. Reading or listening to this story gives the result of Vajpayee Yajna. This fast is the bestower salvation and is like the Chintamani gem fulfills all desires.
Shri Krishna said, “O Dharmaraj! The strongest aspiration of human beings is to get salvation. The fasting of Mokshada Ekadashi is most important to achieve this goal of salvation. Therefore, one should fast with faith & devotion and should worship Lord Vishnu.
Note: Vaikuntha Ekadashi (Also spelled as Vaikuntha Ekadasi or Vaikunta Ekadasi) is a very auspicious day observed by the Hindus. The Ekadashi is also known as Mukkoti Ekadasi or Swarga Vathil Ekadashi.Vaikuntha Ekadashi is one of the major festivals celebrated in the temples of Lord Vishnu, especially in South India. Apart from being an Ekadashi, this day also commemorates the attainment of Vaikuntha, the spiritual kingdom of Lord Vishnu by Nammalwar, a great devotee in the Sri Vaishnava sampradaya.
Gita Jayanti normally falls on the same day as Vaikuntha Ekadashi. However this may differ from Mokshada/Vaikunth ekadashi at times due to Adhik Mas. it was one month ahead of Vaikuntha Ekadashi. Gita Jayanti is the day when Lord Krishna instructed Arjuna in the essence of spiritual knowledge. Hence, reading the Bhagavad-gita is one of the highly recommended spiritual activities on this day.
