Lord Ganpati was created by Goddess Parvati, in the absence of Lord Shiva. Mother Goddess Parvati created Lord Ganesha from her sandalwood paste and placed him on guard while she went to take a bath.

While she was gone, Lord Shiva got into a fight with Ganesh because he refused to let him in, as per his mother's commands.

When Lord Ganesha refused to let him in despite his repeated requests, Lord Shiva became enraged and severed Lord Ganesh's head. When Goddess Parvati discovered this, she turned into Goddess Kali and threatened to destroy the cosmos.

Lord Shiva then ordered his trident to find the head of any child whose mother has her back towards the child.  The first child seen was an elephant calf. The trident cut its head and brought the same to Lord Shiva.

He quickly placed Lord Ganesha's head on his body and restored his life. Goddess Parvati returned to her normal form after ths, and all the deities blessed Lord Ganesha.  Since then, this day is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi.
