Margshirsh Krishna Ekadashi-Utpanna Ekadashi
मार्गशीर्ष मास को को अगहन मास भी कहते हैं|सत युग में देवों ने मार्गशीर्ष मास की प्रथम तिथि को ही वर्ष प्रारंभ किया।
नैमिषारण्य क्षेत्र में ऋषियों ने एक बार श्री सूत जी से प्रश्न किया की एकादशी कैसे उत्पन्न हुई? श्री सूत जी बोले,” अनंत पुण्य फल प्रदायिनी एकादशी की उत्पत्ति के संबंध में प्राचीनकाल में भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने अपने परम भक्त युधिष्ठिर से कहा था| वह सारा वृतांत मैं अब आपसे कहता हूँ|
श्री सूत जी ने कहा , एक समय युधिष्ठिर ने भगवान श्री कृष्ण से पूछा,” हे भगवान पुण्यमयी एकादशी की उत्पत्ति कैसे हुई? एकादशी का व्रत किस विधि से किया जाता है और उसका क्या फल प्राप्त होता है? उपवास के दिन जो क्रिया की जाती है,आप कृपा करके इस एकादशी की समस्त महिमा मुझे सविस्तार सुनाने की कृपा करें|
यह सुनकर भगवान श्री कृष्ण कहने लगे,” हे युधिष्ठिर! मैं एकादशी के व्रत का महात्म्य तुमसे कहता हूँ, ध्यान लगाकर सुनो|
सर्वप्रथम हेमंत ऋतु में मार्गशीर्ष कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी से इस व्रत को प्रारंभ करना चाहिए| दशमी को सायंकाल भोजन करके अच्छी तरह से दातुन करना चाहिए, ताकि अन्न का कोई कण भी मुँह में ना रह जाए| रात्रि को भोजन कदापि नही करना चाहिए वा अधिक नही बोलना चाहिए| एकादशी के दिन प्रातः चार बजे उठकर सबसे पहले व्रत का संकल्प करें| इसके पश्चात शौच आदि से निवृत्त होकर नदी, तालाब, कुएें या बावड़ी पर जाकर स्नान से पहले अपने शरीर पर मिट्टी का चंदन लगाना चाहिए| मिट्टी का चंदन लगाते समय इस मंत्र का पाठ करते जायें|
अश्वक्रांते रथक्रांते विष्णु क्रांते वसुंधरे|
उद्धृतपी वरोहेण कृषणें न शत बाहुना ||
मृत्तिके हर में पापं यन्मया पूर्व संचितम |
त्वया हतेन पापेन गच्छामि परमां गतिम||
व्रत करने वाले को शुद्ध जल से स्नान करने के पश्चात पापी, चोर , पाखंडी , परस्त्रीगामी, पर निंदक , दुराचारी, दूसरे के धन को चुराने वाला, मंदिरों में चोरी करने वाला, मिथ्याभाषी तथा किसी भी प्रकार के दुष्ट मनुष्य से बात नही करनी चाहिए| यदि अंजाने में इनसे बात हो जाए तो इस पाप को दूर करने के लिए सूर्य नारायण के दर्शन कर लेने चाहिए| स्नान के पश्चात धूप , दीप , नैवेद्य आदि सोलह चीज़ों से भगवान का पूजन करना चाहिए और रात को दीप दान करना चाहिए| ये सभी सत्कर्म भक्ति और श्रद्धा से युक्त होकर करना चाहिए| उस रात्रि को शयन और स्त्री प्रसंग नही करना चाहिए, सारी रात्रि भजन – कीर्तन करना चाहिए| जाने-अंजाने में किए गये पापों की क्षमा माँगनी चाहिए| धार्मिक जानो को कृष्ण पक्ष और शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशियों को एक समान समझना चाहिए|
जो मनुष्य उपर लिखी हुई विधि के अनुसार एकादशी का व्रत करते हैं , उन्हे शॅंखोद्धार तीर्थ में स्नान करके भगवान के दर्शन करने से जो फल प्राप्त होता है , वह एकादशी के व्रत के फल के सोलहवें भाग के बराबर भी नही है| व्यतिपात के दिन , संक्रांति में तथा सूर्य-चंद्र ग्रहण में स्नान दान करने से जो फल प्राप्त होता है, वही पुण्य मनुष्य को एकादशी का व्रत करने प्राप्त होता है|
अश्वमेध यज्ञ करने से जो पुण्य मनुष्य को प्राप्त होता है, उससे सौ गुना पुण्य मनुष्य को एकादशी का व्रत करने से प्राप्त होता है| एक लाख तपस्वियों को साठ वर्ष तक भोजन कराने से दस गुना, दस ब्राह्मणो को भोजन कराने से हज़ार गुना पुण्य भूमि दान देने होता है| उससे हज़ार गुना पुण्य कन्या दान करने से होता है और उससे दस गुना पुण्य विद्या दान से होता है| विद्या दान से दस गुना पुण्य भूखे को भोजन कराने से होता है| अन्न दान के समान संसार में कोई ऐसा दूसरा पुण्य नही है जिससे देवता और स्वर्गीय पितर दोनो तृप्त होते हों| परंतु एकादशी के व्रत का पुण्य सबसे अधिक होता है| इस दान का महात्म्य देवता भी वर्णन नही कर सकते| हज़ार यज्ञो से भी ज़्यादा इसका फल मिलता है| एकादशी के व्रत का प्रभाव देवताओं को भी दुर्लभ है|
रात्रि को भोजन करने वाले को उपवास का आधा फल मिलता है और दिन में एक समय भोजन करने वाले को उसका आधा, परंतु निर्जल व्रत रखने वाले का वर्णन कोई नही कर सकता| एकादशी का व्रत करने पर ही यज्ञ, दान, तप आदि मिलते हैं अन्यथा नहीं| अतः एकादशी अवश्य ही व्रत करना चाहिए| इस व्रत में शंख से जल नही पीना चाहिए तथा अन्न एकादशी के व्रत मैं वर्जित है|
ऐसा सुनकर युधिष्ठिर ने कहा,” हे भगवान आपने इस एकादशी के व्रत अनेक तीर्थों के पुण्य से श्रेष्ठ, पवित्र वा हज़ारों यज्ञो और लाख गौदान को भी एकादशी व्रत के बराबर नही बताया है| सो एकादशी तिथि सब तिथियों से उत्तम कैसे हुई , यह सब विस्तार से कहिए|
युधिष्ठिर के वचन सुनकर भगवान श्री कृष्ण बोले ,” हे युधिष्ठिर! सतयुग में एक महा भयंकर मुर नमक राक्षस था वह अत्यंत बलवान और भयंकर था| वह संपूर्ण देवताओं का घोर शत्रु था| उस दैत्य से सभी देवता भयभीत रहते थे| उसने अपनी शक्ति से इंद्र, आदित्य, वासू , वायु अग्नि आदि सभी देवताओं को पराजित करके अमरावती पूरी से नीचे गिरा दिया| दरकार सभी देवता मृत्यु लोक की गुफ़ाओं में निवास करने लगे| मुर राक्षस से व्याकुल हुए इंद्र, आदित्य, वासू , वायु ,अग्नि, चंद्रमा आदि देवता अपनी रक्षा के लिए देवाधिदेव महादेव की शरण में गये | देवताओं ने अत्यंत दीन भाव से दैत्य के अत्याचारों और अपने दुखो का वर्णन किया| भगवान शंकर ने देवताओं के दुख से द्रवित होकर कहा की आप तीनो लोक के स्वामी , भक्तो के दुखो का नाश करने वाले भगवान विष्णु के शरण में जाओ, वही तुम्हारे दुखों को दूर कर सकते हैं|
शिवाजी की आज्ञा पाकर समस्त देव गण क्षीर सागर में गये| वहाँ शेषशय्या पर भगवान विष्णु को शयन करते देख कर इंद्र हाथ जोड़ कर बड़ी विनम्रता से उनकी स्तुति करने लगे- “हे देवताओं के देवता और देवताओं द्वारा स्तुति करने योग्य प्रभो! आपको बारंबार प्रणाम है| हे देव रक्षक, कमल नेत्र मधुसूदन देवताओं की रक्षा करें| दैत्यों से भयभीत होकर समस्त देव गण आपकी शरण में आए हैं| आप ही इस संसार के कारक और कर्ता हैं, सबके माता -पिता हैं, जगत की उत्पत्ति, पालन और संहार कर्ता तथा देवताओं की सहायता करने वाले और शांति प्रदान करने वाले हैं|”
तीनो लोकों को उत्पन्न करने वाले ब्रह्मा , सूर्य, चंद्र , अग्नि, हव्य, स्मरण, मंत्र , यजमान, यज्ञ, कर्म,कर्ता, भोक्ता आप ही हैं|आकाश पाताल भी आप ही हैं. आप सर्व-व्यापक हैं, आपके सिवा तीनो लोकों में चर या अचर कुछ भी नही है| हे भगवान दैत्यों ने हमको जीत कर स्वर्ग से निकाल दिया है|उन्होने देवलोक पर अपना अधिकार कर लिया है| सब देवता इधर-उधर भागे फिर रहे हैं| आप उन दैत्यों से हमारी रक्षा करिए, रक्षा करिए| “
देवताओं की करुण पुकार सुनकर भगवान बोले,” हे देवताओं, ऐसा मायावी राक्षस कौन है , उसका क्या नाम है और उसमे कितना बल है और वह किसके आश्रय में है तथा उसका स्थान कहाँ है? यह सब मुझसे कहो|
भगवान के वचनो को सुनकर इंद्र बोले,” हे देवेश्वर! नाड़ी जंग नाम का एक दैत्य था| उस दैत्य की ब्रह्म वंश से उत्पत्ति हुई थी, उसी दैत्य का पुत्र है मुर| वह चंद्रावती नगरी में रहता है| उसी महापराक्रमी और लोक विख्यात मुर ने सभी देवताओं को स्वर्ग से निकाल कर, वहाँ अपना अधिकार कर लिया है| वह इंद्र, अग्नि वरुण, यम, वायु, ईश, चंद्रमा ,नैऋत, आदि सबके स्थान पर अधिकार करके और सूर्य बनकर स्वयं ही प्रकाश करता है| वह स्वयं ही मेघ बन बैठा है और सबसे अजेय है| हे भगवान आप उस दैत्य को मारकर सब देवताओं को निर्भय बनाइए और हमारा दुख दूर कीजिए|
इंद्र के ऐसे वचन सुनकर भगवान विष्णु ने कहा,” हे देवगणो! मैं शीघ्र ही तुम्हारे शत्रु का संहार करूँगा| आप सब धीरज धरें, मैं इस मुर राक्षस से आप सब की रक्षा करूँगा| तुम सब मेरे साथ चंद्रावती नगरी चलो|
फिर भगवान सहित सब देवताओं ने चंद्रावती नगरी की ओर प्रस्थान किया| उस समय दैत्यापति मुर दैत्य सेना सहित रण भूमि में गरज रहा था| चंद्रावती नगरी में देवताओं की ओर से भगवान विष्णु और अपनी समस्त शक्ति सहित मुर आमने – सामने खड़े हो गये| बलवान राक्षस मुर की गर्जना सुनकर सब देवता चारो दिशाओं में भय के मारे भागने लगे| मुर के सामने देवता घड़ी भर भी ना ठहर सके| तब भगवान विष्णु युद्ध भूमि में आ गये|उन्होने अपने चक्र और गदा से राक्षस सेना पर इतने भीषण प्रहार किए की राक्षस सेना छिन्न -भिन्न हो गयी| इस युद्ध में अनेक दानव सदा के लिए सो गये|केवल मुर ही जीवित बच रहा|
चक्र ने चारो ओर शत्रुओं का सफ़ाया कर दिया , बस एक मुर का सिर ना काट सका| और ना गदा उसकी गर्दन तोड़ सकी| दैत्यों का राजा मुर भगवान के साथ अविचल भाव से युद्ध करता रहा| भगवान जब भी मुर को मारने के लिए जिन -जिन अस्त्रों और शस्त्रों का प्रयोग करते वो उसके तेज से नष्ट होकर पुष्पों के समान हो जाते| अब वे आपस में मल्ल युद्ध अरने लगे और दस हज़ार वर्ष तक उनका युद्द होता रहा, परंतु दैत्य मुर पराजित ना हुआ| अंत में भगवान विष्णु युद्ध से थककर बद्रिकाश्रम को चले गये| वहाँ पर हेमवती(सिंघवती) नाम की एक सुंदर गुफा थी, जो 12 योजन (48 कोस) लंबी थी| उसमे विश्राम करने के लिए व अंदर प्रवेश कर गये| उस गुफा का एक ही द्वार था| इधर मुर ने अपनी शक्ति को पुनः संजोया और भगवान विष्णु का पीछा करता हुआ बद्रिकाश्रम आ पहुँचा| विष्णु भगवान उस गुफा में जाकर सो गये थे| दैत्य मुर ने देखा की भगवान विष्णु उस गुफा में सो रहे हैं|
वह उनको सोता हुआ देख, मारने के लिए उद्धत हुआ| मुर ने सोचा अगर विष्णु जाग कर सामना करेंगे तो मेरा और मेरी सेना का संहार कर डालेंगे| अतः अचेत अवस्था का लाभ उठा कर मुझे विष्णु पर प्रहार करना चाहिए|
हे धर्मराज! मुर की ऐसी भावना जानकार विष्णु भगवान के शरीर से एक कन्या स्वरूप तेजस्वी शक्ति, दिव्य अस्त्र- शस्त्र धारण किए हुए उत्पन्न हुई| इस शक्तिसंपन्न कन्या ने सामने आकर मुर को ललकारकारा और युद्ध करने लगी| वह दैत्य भगवान विष्णु पर प्रहार करना भूल आश्चर्यान्वित हो कर इस कन्या की ओर देखने लगा और उसके साथ युद्ध करने लगा| उस कन्या के भयानक पराक्रम को देखकर दैत्य विचारने लगा की इस कन्या को किसने बनाया है जो ऐसा भयानक युद्ध कर रही है| वह ऐसा सोच ही रहा था की उस शक्ति संपन्न कन्या ने मुर के अस्त्र – शस्त्र काट दिए, उस बलवान दैत्य के रथ को चूर- चूर कर दिया| दैत्य मुर के साथी इस कन्या के हाथों मरने लगे| तब वह दैत्य क्रोध करके उससे मल्ल युद्ध करने लगा क्योंकि वह शस्त्र हीन हो चुका था|परंतु उस कन्या ने उसे धक्का मार कर उसे धरती पर पटक कर मूर्छित कर दिया| जब वह दैत्य मूर्छा से जाग तो उस कन्या ने उसके वक्ष पर चरण रखा कर उसका सिर काट कर उसे यम लोक पहुँचा दिया| इस प्रकार वह दैत्य पृथ्वी पर गिर कर मृत्यु को प्राप्त हुआ और बाकी दैत्य डर के मारे पाताल चले गये|
दैत्य का वध हुआ देख कर समस्त देवता भगवान विष्णु की जय- जय कार करने लगे और आकाश से पुष्पों की वर्ष होने लगी| जब भगवान विष्णु की निद्रा टूटी तो उन्होने देखा की उनके सामने मुर अंगहीन मृत अवस्था में पड़ा हुआ है| एक दिव्य कन्या विजय का उल्लास लिए विनम्रता से दोनो हाथ जोड़े खड़ी है| भगवान विष्णु मूर की मृत्यु पर प्रसन्न होकर उस कन्या से पूछने लगे,” हे देवी जिस दैत्य से ईन्द्रादि सब देवता भयभीत हो कर स्वर्ग से भाग गये थे, उसको किसने मारा ?उन्होने आगे कहा,” हे देवी तुम कौन हो?
भगवान विष्णु के पूछने पर कन्या ने अपना परिचय दिया और बोली,” भगवान मैं आपका ही तेज हूँ| जब आप सो रहे थे तो यह दैत्य आपको मारने के लिए आया , उसी समय आपकी योगमाया द्वारा आपके शरीर से उत्पन्न होकर मैने इस दैत्य को मार गिराया| दुष्ट मुर सामान्य युद्ध नियमो की अवहेलना कर उस समय हमला करना चाहता था जब आप सोए हुए थे|
विष्णु भगवान बोले ,” हे देवी! तुमने देवताओं के भय को दूर करके बड़ा पवित्र कार्य किया है| तुमने अनीति करने वाले दैत्य का वध किया है|मैं तुमसे प्रसन्न हूँ|तुम इच्छानुसार वार माँगो| तुमने तीनो लोकों के देवताओं को सुखी किया है|
तब कन्या ने कहा,” भगवान आप कुछ देना ही चाहते हैं तो तो यह वरदान दीजिए की जो कोई मेरा व्रत करे तो उसके सारे पाप नष्ट हो जायें और अंत में मोक्ष प्राप्त हो| आपकी कृपा से मैं समस्त तीर्थों से अधिक महत्वपूर्ण तथा अपने भक्तों को मनोवांच्छित वर देने वाली बनूँ| जो मनुष्य मेरे दिन तथा रात्रि को एक बार भोजन करे वह धन-धान्य से भरपूर रहे| जो इस व्रत का पुण्य है उसका आधा रात्रि को भोजन करने वाले को मिले और और जो एक बार भजन करे उसको भी आधा फल मिले| जो मनुष्य भक्ति भाव से मेरे व्रत में एक बार भी भोजन ना करे, उसको धर्म, धन और मुक्ति प्राप्त हो|
श्री विष्णु भगवान ने एवमस्तु कह कर आशीष दिया और कहा कि ऐसा ही होगा, मेरे और तुम्हारे भक्त एक ही होंगे और वे अंत में मोक्ष प्राप्त करके मेरे लोक को जाएँगे| क्योंकि तुम एकादशी को उत्पन्न हुई हो अतः तुम्हारा नाम एकादशी होगा| तीनो लोक में तुम एकादशी के नाम से जानी जाओगी| तुम्हारे भक्त संसारिक सुख भोग कर अंततः मोक्ष को प्राप्त होंगे| तुम्हारे कृष्ण और शुक्ल पक्ष के रूप को सदैव सम्मान मिलेगा| तुम मुझे सब तिथियों से प्रिय हो इस कारण तुम्हारे व्रत का फल सब तीर्थों के फल से अधिक होगा| यह मेरा तुम्हे आशीर्वाद है| ऐसा कहकर भगवान अंतर्धान हो गये और प्रभु के उत्तम वचनो से संतुष्ट सम्मानित वर प्राप्त कर एकादशी अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुई|
भगवान श्री कृष्ण बोले हे युधिष्ठिर! जो व्यक्ति एकादशी महात्म्य की इस कथा को पढ़ेगा अथवा सुनेगा वह अनंत पुण्य का भागी बनेगा| एकादशी व्रत करने वालों को मैं मोक्ष पद देता हूँ| उसके शत्रुओं का नाश और समस्त विघ्नो को नष्ट करता हूँ| एकादशी पापों को नष्ट करने वाली तथा सिद्धि देने वाली है| दोनो पक्षों की एकादशियों को एक समान ही मानना चाहिए, कोई भेद भाव नही समझना चाहिए|
एकादशी महात्म्य को जो पढ़ता है और सुनता है उसको अश्वमेध यज्ञ का फल प्राप्त होता है| वह करोड़ो वर्ष तक विष्णु लोक में निवास करता है| वहाँ भी उसका पूजन होता है|
व्रती अपने व्रत का संकल्प प्रातः सूर्य भगवान को अर्ध्य देते समय करना चाहिए| विष्णु धर्म के समान संसार में कोई दूसरा धर्म नही है और एकादशी व्रत के बराबर कोई दूसरा व्रत नही है| यह व्रत समस्त वैभवों को देने वाला तथा निष्ठावान के लिए सहज साध्य भी है|
पतित पावनि, विश्वतारणी एकादशी का जन्म मार्गशीर्ष मास के कृष्ण पक्ष में हुआ था |इस कारण इसका नाम नाम उत्पन्ना प्रसिद्ध है|

Once in the Namisharanya region, the Rishis asked Revered Sage Sutaji,” How did Ekadashi fast came into existence? Shri Sutji said, “Lord Shri Krishna once had told his devotee Yudhishtir, about the origin of the everlasting punya giver Ekadashi, I tell you all the same story now.”
Shri Sutaji said, At one time Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna, “O Lord! How did this great fast of Ekadashi started? What is the procedure of the Ekadashi fast and what are results obtained from it? What activities are done on the day of Ekadashi? Kindly tell us in all detail.”
Thus hearing the request from Yudhishthira, Lord Krishna said, “O Yudhisthir! I am telling you the greatness of Ekadashi fast, listen carefully.
This fast should start with the Ekadashi (Eleventh day) of dark fortnight of Margashirsha in the Hemant season. One day before Ekadashi, on Dashami(tenth day) one should eat before sunset and brush their teeth well with Neem tree datun(now dys use any vegan toothpaste), so that no grain of grain should remain in the mouth. Do not eat food at night and do not speak too much. Arise at four o’clock in the morning of Ekadashi, and first resolution(Use Sankalpa mantra) to carry out the fast. After this get free from nature’s calls and if possible go to the river, the pond, the well etc to take bath .If not possible take bath at home only. Put the soil chandana(a holy soil called ‘Gopi Chandana’ could be used for this purpose as we don’t find clean soil nowadays).The Soil Chandana(Gopi Chandana) should be rubbed gently on the body before bathing. While rubbing the Soil Chandna, recite this mantra.

Uddhritapi varohena Krishnane na shat baahuna|
Mritake har me papam yanmaya poorva sanchitam
Tvaya haten paapen gachhaami paramam gatim ||

After taking a bath with pure water,The Devotee should not talk to following -the sinner, the thief, the hypocrite, the debauchee, but the slanderer, the abusive person, one steals the wealth of others with deceit, the person committing theft in the temples, the incorrigible liars. If you talk to them by mistake, then you should take a look at Sun God to nullify this sin. After bath, the devotee should worship Lord with sixteen articles of Shodashopachara Pooja procedure, offering hims incense , lamp, fruits etc and should burn the lamp at night near Lord.If possible keep the lamp lt whole night(Akhand Diya). All these steps should be done with complete devotion and faith.
One should remain awake whole night and should not get in relation with women that day. Recite devotional scriptures and songs whole night and remain awake. Devotee should ask forgiveness of the sins committed knowingly and unknowingly. Devout and equanimous Vratees (Who observe the fast) consider the Ekadashi of bright and dark fortnight of the month equal and fast on on bothe Ekadashis with full faith and equal fervour.
The merit that received after taking bath in holy Shankhoddhar tritha and seeing the Lord thereafter, is not even equal to the sixteenth part of the merit received by he merit received by the devotee who performs the Ekadashi vrata, according to the aforementioned procedure.
The great merit which is received by taking bath and doing charity on Vyatipat Yoga, Solar & Lunar eclipse, Sn transition into other rashi, is equal to merit received by doing Ekadashi vrata.
The virtue received by doing Ekadashi Vrata is hundred times of virtue received by doing Ashwamedh Yajna,
- Donating land is 10 times more merit than feeding 1 lakh tapasvis for sixty years.
- Donating land is 1000 times more merit than feeding 10 Vednishtha Brahmans.
- Merit received by Kanyadaan (Giving away daughter in marriage to groom) is 1000 more than donating land.
- The merit of giving the gift of knowledge(of art, skill) is 10 time more than Kanyadaan.
- The merit of feeding a hungry person is 10 time more than that of gifting knowledge.
There is no such other virtue in the world like donating food. Both the gods and the heavenly ancestors are satisfied with donation of food. But glory of Ekadashi fast is the highest. The gods can not even describe the importance of this fast. It gives merits more than thousands of yagnas. The effect of the fasting of Ekadashi is also rare for Gods.
The person who eats the night gets half the result of fasting, and the one who eats in day time once, gets even the half of merit of the one who eats at night. But no one can not describe the merits achieved by the person who keeps the waterless fast(neither eating or drinking anything full day and night. All Yajna, donation and penance give results only after keeping the fast of Ekadashi , otherwise they do not bear results. Therefore Ekadashi must be fasted. In this fast, the vratee should not drink water from conch and the should not eat grains.
Yudhishthira said, “O Lord! You have mentioned Ekadashi superior & more sacred than several pilgrimages, thousands of Yajnas , and donation of lakhs of cows. So how did the Ekadashi date beame better than all other days, Please tell us all this in detail.
Lord Shri Krishna said, “O Yudhisthira! There was a fierce monster called Mura, in Satyuga. He was very strong and hideous. He was a sworn enemy of the Gods. All the deities were afraid of Mura. Mura defeated Indra, Aditya, Vasu, Air, Fire & all other Gods and evicted them away from their heavenly abode Amravati. Now evicted, the Deities started residing in the caves on mortal plane of Earth. Terrorised by Mura and distraught Gods Indra, Aditya, Vasu, Vayu, Agni, Moon etc. went to Lord Shiva for protection.
The gods, with all their humility, described the atrocities of the monster Mura to Lord Shiva. Bhagwan Shankar, was moved by the plight of the Gods. He told them further to go and take refuge of Lord Vishnu, who the destroyer of the sorrows of devotees & the lord of the three realms, only he can remove your sorrows.
Thus getting the orders of Lord Shiva, all the Gods went to the ‘Kshir Sagar’, the abode of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu was sleeping on the Sheshnag, all Devas along with Lord Indra started to praise Lord Vishnu with great humility.
“O Lord! You are the God of Gods and worthy of praise by all deities ! We bow down to you again and again in deep reverence.O Protector of Gods, the one with lotus like eyes, the slayer of Madhu demon ,please protect gods. We all the Gods have come in your shelter, due to the fear of demons. You are the cause and the creator of this world, you are the parent of all. You are the origin, sustainer and destroyer of the world and the protector of Gods and bestower of peace to us.
O Lord! You re the creator Brahma who is the creator of all three realms, You are Sun,Moon,Fire, Havya,memory, yajn, the doer and deed and the result of deed too. You are the sky and netherworld . You are all-pervasive, there is nothing in the past or the other in all the three worlds. O Prabhu, the demons have defeated us and have thrown us out of heaven. He has taken over the abode of Devaloka. All Gods are homeless and running around here and there. We request you to kindly protect us from those demons.Please protect us. “
The God Vishnu said, “O Devas, who is such an elusive monster? What is his name and how much force he has? Who else gives him support? Where does he reside? Tell me all in detail.
Hearing upon the words of God, Indra said, “O Deveshwar! Mur is the son of a infamous deon Nadi Jung, who was born in the Brahma dynasty. He lives in the Chandraprabha city. He has forced out all the deities out of heaven and has captured it now. He has taken over the positions of all Devas, Indra, Agni Varuna, Yama, Air, Ish, Moon & Naritya.He himself has become sun and gives light. He himself has become a cloud and cause rains. He is invincible. O God, Make all us gods fearless by killing that demon, and remove our sorrows.
Hearing such words of Indra, Lord Vishnu said, “O Deavs, I will destroy your enemy soon. All of you have patience and courage. I will protect you from this deadly demon. All of you should come to Chandravati city.
Then all the Devas , along with God Vishnu, proceeded towards Chandravati city. Mur was making thunderous warcry with his army there in the battlefield there. Lord Vishnu and all devas & Mur demon stood face-to-face in the battlefield in Chandravati. Listening to the roar of the mighty Mur, all Gods started running away with fear in all directions. Deities could not withstand in front of Mur. Then Lord Vishnu came into the battleground. He used his chakra(a powerful discuss weapon) and mace on the demon army an decimated the major part of demon army within moments. Monster army became fragmented. Many warriors died and reats ran away only Mur demon survived though.
The chakra cleared the enemies surrounding but could not cut the head of Mur demon neither the mace could break his neck. The king of the demons was fighting with God with an undaunted spirit. Whenever weapons Lord used to kill Mur , they were softened due to the Tejas of Mur and became like flowers. Now they began to fight with bare hands and continued to fight for ten thousand years, but the demon Mur was not defeated. In the end, Lord Vishnu got tired of war and went to Badrikashram.
There was a beautiful cave named Hemavati (Singhavati), which was 12 Yojna (48 Kos,1 Kos=2.25 miles) long. Lord entered that cave to take rest. There was only one gate in that cave. On the other hand, Mur again recollected his power and followed the Lord Vishnu to Badrikashram. Lord Vishnu was asleep in that cave. The monster demon Mur found out Lord Vishnu sleeping in the cave.
He saw Lord sleeping, and thought of killing him in sleep. Mur thought, if Lord Vishnu wakes up, then he will destroy his whole army. Therefore, taking advantage of seemingly unconscious state, he should attack Vishnu.
When Mur was thinking like this, , a beautiful but intense looking girl emerged from the body of all omniscient Lord Vishnu, with divine weapon in her arms. This powerful girl came forward and challenged Mur and started fighting. The demon was startled at seeing this ferocious girl emerging out of Lord Vishnu’s body and started fighting with her. Seeing the tremendous power and valour of that girl, Mura started wondering, who made this girl, that she is doing such a ferocious war.
While Mur was thinking like this , The Goddess destroyed all weapons of Mur and and crushed his mighty chariot. The monster’s companions started dying at the hands of this girl. This enraged Mura and he started fighting with his bare hands in battle as all his weapons were destroyed. But the girl was supremely powerful , she pushed him to the ground and fainted him with her powerful punches. When the monster regained his consciousness then the girl stepped on his chest and beheaded him. Mur died instantly.The other demons went to netherworld in fear.
All the gods were elated at the death of Mur and began to sing praises of Lord Vishnu. The showered flowers at the Goddess and Lord Vishnu. When Lord Vishnu’s sleep was broken, he saw Mur’s dismembered body lying in front of. He also saw a young girl standing there, with a smile of victory and both hands are folded together with humility. Lord Vishnu, pleased with the death of Mur, asked the girl, “O Goddess, Who has killed this mighty demon who had terrorised and evicted even Indra and other gods from heaven? And who are you?”
At the request of Lord Vishnu, the divine girl gave her introduction and said, “God, I am your own Tejas(Splendour). When you were asleep, this monster came to kill you, at the same time I emerged from your body by your own Yogamaya and killed this demon. The evil moor wanted to breach the rules of righteous warfare and wanted to attack you when you were asleep.
Lord Vishnu said, “O Goddess! You have done a very splendid job by removing the fear of the gods. You have killed the demon who has done great misdeeds.You have brought the peace and happiness to all three realms. I am happy with you. Ask for any boon you like.”
Then the girl said, “Lord if you are pleased with me then give me the boon that if whoever does my fast, all his sins will be destroyed and he should attain the salvation(Moksha). By your grace I should be more important than all the pilgrimages and should be able to grant the wishes of all my devotees. If anyone who eats food only once either in day of night on my day, he would be full of riches and wealth, by the virtue of this fast. People eating at night should get half the merit of full fast and those eating once in daytime should get half merit of the eating at night. The person who does not eat even once in my fast and does fast with full with devotional worship, he should receives high merits in religion, great wealth and liberation.
Lord Vishnu blessed Goddess Ekadashi and said ,” Let it be so.”He further said that both mine and your devotees will be the same and they will eventually get salvation and come to my abode only. Since you have been born on Ekadashi, so your name will be ‘Ekadashi’ & you will known by this name in l three realms.Your devotees will enjoy worldly pleasures and will also achieve salvation ultimately. Your both forms of Dark fortnight fast and bright fortnight will be respected equally. You are dearer to me than all the dates, because of this, the merits of your fast will be more than the merits of all pilgrimages. This is my blessing to you. After saying this, Lord Vishnu disappeared. Goddess Ekadashi was very pleased and satisfied with the boons granted by Lord Vishnu.
Lord Krishna said, ” O Yudhisthira! The person who will read or listen to this story of importance of Ekadashi, will become a part of infinite merit and grace. Those who perform Ekadashi fast, I grant them salvation. I destroy their enemies and all their obstacles. Ekadashi is destroyer of sins and grants success. Ekadashi of both fortnights must be treated equally, no discrimination should be done in any case.
Whoever reads and listens to the greatness of Ekadashi achieves the merit of Ashwamedh Yajna. He lives in abode of Lord Vishnu for several millions of years. There also he is venerated.
The vow of your fast should be taken in the morning at the time of sunrise while offering arghya(fragrant water offered to Sun God) to Sun. There is no other religion in the world like religion of devotion to Lord Vishnu, and there is no other fast equal to Ekadashi fast. This fast grants all wealth and is also easily done by all faithful devotees.
The redeemer of fallen, the saviour of the world -Goddess Ekadashi was born on the dark fortnight of Margashirsha month, hence the name Utpanna(Born) is famous for this date.
