Types of bath in Vedic Scriptures

Bath is given very high importance in Vedic culture. Almost all religious rituals require you to take bath. Apart from the hygienic values its is also considered to cleanse your sins. That is why people take bath is holy rivers on auspicious ‘muhurts’. Muhurts are specific periods when any acts gives you manifolds spiritual merits.

It is said that bath in auspicious muhurts will give great religious merits and eradicate your sins. Hindu religious scriptures specify six types of Baths. Each is used as per the requirement of occasion or event.

Braahm bath:

In this bath they sprinkle water from Kusha grass over the body while chanting vedic mantras. Kusha is also known as Halfa grass ( scientific name Desmostachya bipinnata) considered very auspicious in used very widely in vedic rituals.

Agneya Bath :

When people smear ash from their head to tow it is called as Agneya bath. Agneya is derived from word ‘Agni’ which means fire. This type of bath is usually done aghoris.

Vayavya Bath:

Cows are considered holy in India. The soil which is touched by them , when used for smearing is called Vayavya bath. Vayavya is derived from ‘Vaayu’, which means Air. Usually the smearing during the dusk time when cows return to their steads is the time when the air is filled with dust flown by cow hoofs and it  and such bath could be specified as Vayavya bath.

Divya Bath :

Bath taken in direct rainwater is called Divya bath. ‘Divya’ means divine.

Varunya Bath :

When you take dip in water, such bath is called Varunya Bath. Varunya is derived from ‘Varun’. Varun is God of water.

Yogic Bath :

When we consider the Supreme Soul element inside us or we meditate on God and think ourselves as taken bath it is called Yogic Bath

Kapil Snan:: Apart from all above baths if the person is not able to take bath due to illness or weakness he may not put water on his head but take bath or the rest of the body or he just wipes his body with damp cloth , it is called Kapil Snan.
